Finley Seamed Textured Beanie by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Finley is a classic knitted beanie designed for the whole family, available in five different sizes ranging from Age 2-5 through to adult Men's sizing. This hat features a comfortable 1x1 ribbed brim that transitions into an easy textured stitch pattern across the crown, making it an accessible project suitable for beginner knitters.
Sizing Options
The pattern accommodates multiple head sizes:
- Age 2-5: 52cm (20½ inches)
- Age 6-10: 54cm (21¼ inches)
- Teen: 55cm (21¾ inches)
- Lady: 56cm (22 inches)
- Man: 59cm (23 inches)
Knitting Techniques Used
This beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with a cast-on of 93 to 105 stitches depending on size. The lower section uses a 1x1 ribbed brim, created by alternating knit and purl stitches, which provides elasticity and helps the hat sit securely on the head. After the ribbed section is completed, the pattern transitions into an easy textured stitch that adds visual interest to the crown while remaining manageable for less experienced knitters. The hat is finished with seaming, using a wool needle to join the side seams together.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The primary stitches used throughout the Finley beanie are:
- Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch that creates the base fabric
- Purl stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to form the 1x1 ribbed brim
- 1x1 Rib: Alternating single knit and purl stitches across rows, worked for 6 to 8 rows depending on size
- Textured stitch pattern: An easy pattern worked across the crown section after the ribbed brim is complete
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including alt (alternate), K (knit), P (purl), rep (repeat), and st/s (stitch/stitches) to provide clear instructions throughout.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Finley beanie requires minimal yardage, making it an economical project. The yarn specification calls for Lincraft Supersoft 8ply yarn in 50-gram balls with approximately 100 meters per ball. Yarn quantities vary by size: Age 2-5 requires 1 ball, while sizes Age 6-10 through Man each require 2 balls. The 8ply weight (also known as DK or light worsted weight) provides a balanced fabric weight suitable for year-round wear.
Needles and Tools
The pattern is worked on 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6), which are standard needles appropriate for 8ply yarn. A wool needle is required for sewing the seams together after the main knitting is complete.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is important for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their finished beanie will be the correct size, as tension variations between individual knitters and different yarn types can affect the final measurements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Easy, the Finley beanie is an ideal project for beginner knitters. The straightforward construction, use of basic stitches, and simple shaping make this an excellent introduction to hat knitting. The pattern provides clear instructions and uses standard abbreviations that help guide knitters through each step of the process.
