One too many asterisks…sigh…
I used a yarnover/SSK pattern with a zigzag built in.
Kept the pattern simple so it doesn’t overwhelm the color change.
Yet strong enough lines that the yarn doesn’t obscure the pattern.
Beginning lace knitter. Both charted and written directions.
I made mine in the Silk Garden Lite, but you could easily substitute regular Silk Garden or Kureyon, swap the needle up a couple sizes and decrease the number of repeats.
Festivus - for the rest of us!
Festivus Wrap by Susan Pandorf
What is Being Made
The Festivus Wrap is a rectangular knitted shawl designed by Susan Pandorf, measuring 24 inches wide by 72 inches long. This wrap is an intermediate-level knitting project that creates a versatile accessory suitable for layering and everyday wear. The design draws inspiration from the fictional holiday Festivus, known for its unconventional traditions and celebration of individuality.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Festivus Wrap is knit in one piece from end to end, creating a seamless rectangular garment. This construction method simplifies the finishing process and ensures consistent stitch definition throughout the project. The wrap incorporates 3 selvedge stitches on each edge, which are maintained throughout the knitting process to create clean, finished edges that are ideal for a refined appearance.
Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not provide exhaustive detail on all stitch patterns employed, the project utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for DK weight yarn at an intermediate skill level. The selvedge stitches serve as edge definition throughout the piece.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This knitting project requires the following materials:
- Yarn: 6 balls (816 yards total) of Noro Silk Garden Lite or comparable DK weight yarn
- Color: Colorway 2048
- Needles: US Size 7
- Gauge: Approximately 4 stitches per 1 inch when blocked
Noro Silk Garden Lite is a DK weight yarn blend that offers beautiful color variation and a luxurious feel, making it an excellent choice for a wrap that will be worn close to the body. The specified gauge of 4 stitches per inch is typical for DK weight yarns and ensures the finished wrap will have appropriate drape and structure.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate knitting project, the Festivus Wrap is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects with more complex construction or stitch patterns. The one-piece construction and consistent selvedge maintenance throughout require attention to detail and familiarity with basic knitting techniques.
