Product Description
Ok, so it’s not really a cloak, it’s a poncho! But “cloak” is more evocative isn’t it? This is the perfect cozy layer to throw on before going on any adventure! (and I could absolutely see this being the perfect beach cover up as well!)
CONSTRUCTION:
The hood of this poncho is worked seamlessly from the bottom up and closed using a three-needle bind off. Then stitches at the base of the hood are picked up and the garment is worked seamlessly in one piece from the top down. The hood is fully charted, and corresponding written instructions are provided as well.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Long tail cast on (or provisional cast on if preferred), knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, working simple cables, three needle bind off, working I-cords, binding off.
Fellowship "Cloak" by Frogginette Knitting Patterns
What is Being Made
The Fellowship "Cloak" is a knitted cape-style garment designed by Lisa Chemery for babies and children. This downloadable knitting pattern offers nine size options ranging from 3 months through 10 years old, making it a versatile project suitable for growing children. The cloak features a fitted waist with a flowing silhouette, designed to be worn as a decorative and functional layering piece. The pattern includes construction for a hood and button loop details, adding both style and practicality to this charming garment.
Sizes and Fit
The Fellowship "Cloak" pattern accommodates nine different sizes: 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, 4 years, 6 years, 8 years, and 10 years. Garment waist circumferences range from 24.5 inches (62 cm) for the smallest size to 45.5 inches (115.5 cm) for the largest size. The pattern recommends selecting sizes based on the recipient's actual waist measurement rather than age alone, allowing crafters to customize the fit with desired ease.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric structure of the garment. The pattern utilizes circular knitting on circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and the ability to work in the round. The hood is constructed using a three-needle bind off technique, a method that joins two sets of live stitches together while simultaneously binding them off, creating a strong and neat seam. Additionally, the pattern includes I-cord construction for the button loop details, a technique that creates a small, decorative cord using double-pointed needles.
Stitches and Construction Details
The primary stitch used throughout the Fellowship "Cloak" is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. The pattern also incorporates I-cord elements for functional button loops, adding both decorative and practical details to the finished garment. The three-needle bind off technique used for the hood closure ensures a professional finish and secure seaming without requiring additional finishing work.
Materials and Tools Required
This worsted weight yarn project requires specific needle sizes to achieve proper gauge. Crafters will need a US 7 (4.5 mm diameter) circular needle in either 16 inches (40 cm) length for the smallest size or 24 inches (60 cm) length for all other sizes. The pattern also calls for two double-pointed needles (dpns) in US 5 (3.75 mm diameter), which are two sizes smaller than the main needles, used specifically for working the I-cord button loops. An additional circular or straight needle of the same diameter as the main needles is recommended to facilitate the three-needle bind off technique for the hood. The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and provides excellent stitch definition for this intermediate project.
Difficulty Level
The Fellowship "Cloak" is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The pattern assumes familiarity with circular knitting, Stockinette stitch, and basic shaping, while introducing techniques such as I-cord construction and three-needle bind off that expand a knitter's skill set.
