Father Christmas / Santa Wine Bottle Cover Jacket
What Is Being Made
This is a festive knitted wine bottle cover designed to resemble Santa's iconic red coat jacket. The decorative garment slips over a standard wine bottle, transforming it into a charming holiday decoration or gift presentation. Created by designer Andrew Lucas, this beginner-friendly knitting project combines traditional Christmas colors to capture the jolly spirit of Father Christmas.
Craft and Technique Overview
The Santa Coat Wine Bottle Cover is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The project demonstrates essential skills including casting on, working with multiple yarn colors, shaping garment pieces, and finishing techniques. The design teaches color changes and basic garment construction by creating a main coat body and two matching sleeves that work together to dress the bottle.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch (st st) – The primary fabric stitch, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows. This creates a smooth, classic knitted appearance used for the main red sections of the coat.
- Garter Stitch (gs) – Created by knitting every row, producing a textured, bumpy fabric. This stitch is used for the black band detail and the white ribbed sections, adding visual and tactile interest.
- Ribbed Knit – A combination of knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 pattern) worked in the round at the beginning of pieces to create an elastic, fitted edge.
- Decreasing (dec) – Used to shape the armholes by reducing stitches at each end on alternating rows, creating the fitted sleeve openings.
- Binding Off (B and T) – The finishing technique where stitches are secured by threading the yarn end through remaining stitches on the needle, drawing them up, and tying off to prevent unraveling.
Materials Required
This project uses oddments of double knitting weight yarn, meaning small leftover amounts of yarn work perfectly. The color palette includes red for the main coat body, white for the cuffs and collar details, black for the belt band detail, and yellow for accent elements. A pair of 3.25mm knitting needles is required to work with the double knitting yarn weight.
Construction Details
The Santa Coat begins with 29 cast-on stitches in white yarn, establishing the width of the wine bottle cover. The initial rows feature a ribbed knit pattern to create a neat, elastic edge. The designer then introduces the signature red of Santa's coat, worked in stocking stitch for 12 rows to establish the main body color. A black garter stitch band follows for 6 rows, representing Santa's belt. The coat continues in red stocking stitch for an additional 10 rows before shaping begins.
Armhole shaping is accomplished through decreasing one stitch at each end on alternating rows until only 19 stitches remain, creating fitted openings for the sleeves. The piece finishes with white garter stitch for 4 rows, representing the fur trim at the neck, before casting off.
Two matching sleeves are constructed separately, each beginning with 21 cast-on stitches in white yarn. The sleeves feature the same ribbed knit edge as the main coat body, ensuring a coordinated, professional appearance when the pieces are assembled together on the bottle.
