Product Description

This hat design is a real little house, with a roof, which we can wear to keep us warm wherever we go and put it in our pockets. It will probably cause smiles and melt away the frozen faces we meet. It's all about stranded colorwork - Fair Isle knitting technique.

For this sample I used: * Sport (light DK) weight yarns: MC-frozen light gray (~ 60gr of Ice yarns, Master Alpaca, 191yds~175m/50gr) and CC- warm red (~ 60gr of Alize Superlana Klasik, woolen mixed yarn, 306yds~280m/100gr); * Needles: 16“(40cm) circular needles in US 4 / 3.5mm; an auxiliary needle for bind-off row; tapestry needle; * 10 stitch markers; Size:one women’s / teens size (fits all). Dimensions (flat, fixed, almost square shape): *circumference: 49cm/19.6”; *depth: 23.5cm/9.4”; *3 sts I-cord length: 25cm/10” Gauge ~24 sts x 24 rnds = 10cm/4”

It can be made in a child’s size, with circumference ~40cm and depth ~19cm.

Fair Isle Square Hat by Dejana Knezevic

What is Being Made

The Fair Isle Square Hat is a reversible knitted hat designed with a distinctive geometric silhouette that resembles a small house with a roof. This creative design combines functionality with playful aesthetics, intended to bring warmth and cheerfulness to the wearer. The hat features a unique square shape that sets it apart from traditional round hat designs, making it a statement piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Design Inspiration and Concept

This hat design draws from geometric native patterns that are widely recognized in textile design, fine art, and interior design. Designer Dejana Knezevic has modified and transformed these traditional patterns through her personal creative filter, emphasizing higher contrast for enhanced visual impact. The design philosophy celebrates the free spirit of optimism rooted in textile tradition, creating a garment that is both fun to knit and wear while carrying cultural design heritage.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Primary Technique: Stranded Colorwork (Fair Isle Knitting)

The Fair Isle Square Hat is constructed entirely using the stranded colorwork technique, commonly known as Fair Isle knitting. This traditional method involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows while knitting, creating intricate geometric patterns. Fair Isle knitting requires careful tension management to ensure even fabric and proper pattern definition. The technique produces a reversible fabric with pattern visibility on both front and back sides, making this hat truly wearable from either direction.

Construction Method: The hat is worked from the bottom up in a seamless construction. The pattern concludes with a three-needle bind off, a technique that creates a secure, professional finish by binding off two sets of live stitches together simultaneously. This method eliminates the need for additional seaming and provides a neat, durable closure.

Stitch Work: While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the written pattern, the Fair Isle technique primarily utilizes knit and purl stitches combined with strategic yarn carries to create the colorwork design. The pattern includes detailed charts for following the geometric pattern repeats, along with photo and video tutorials for important stitches to guide knitters through the construction process.

Yarn and Materials

The Fair Isle Square Hat is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights including 6-ply and DK weight options. The sample shown in the pattern was created using sport weight yarns, with the main color (MC) described as frozen light gray. Sport weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork patterns, allowing the geometric Fair Isle design to display clearly and crisply. The reversible nature of the hat means both yarn colors are visible and functional on either side of the finished garment.

Pattern Format and Skill Level

This is an intermediate difficulty knitting pattern provided as a downloadable PDF. The pattern includes written instructions in English, detailed colorwork charts for following the Fair Isle pattern, and instructional photo and video tutorials for important techniques. The intermediate skill level reflects the complexity of managing multiple yarn colors and maintaining consistent tension throughout the stranded colorwork process.

Pattern Versatility

While designed as a hat, the Fair Isle Square Hat pattern is adaptable to multiple projects and applications. The geometric colorwork design and construction techniques can be modified and applied to create:

  • Neck warmers and cowls
  • Pillowcases with coordinating colorwork
  • Bags and accessories
  • Blankets and larger textile projects

This versatility makes the pattern a valuable resource for knitters interested in exploring Fair Isle techniques across different garment types and scales.
