Ermine Stoat Short-Tailed Weasel Crochet Amigurumi Pattern
What Is Being Made
This is a crochet amigurumi pattern designed by Susan Burkhart that creates a stuffed toy representation of an ermine, also known as a stoat or short-tailed weasel. The pattern captures both the winter coloration (ermine) and summer coloration (stoat) of this small, fast-moving member of the weasel family. Amigurumi is the Japanese craft technique of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and figurines, making this an ideal project for creating adorable, huggable representations of these cute creatures.
About Ermines and Stoats
Ermines are members of the weasel family found in Canada, Europe, Asia, and the northern regions of the United States. These animals are known for their exceptional speed, excellent swimming abilities, and remarkable capacity to follow prey through underground burrows. The distinction between "ermine" and "stoat" refers to seasonal coloration changes: ermine describes the winter coat, while stoat refers to the summer coloration. Despite their small size and wild nature, ermines appeal to crafters for their undeniably cute appearance, which translates beautifully into amigurumi form.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern utilizes fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The pattern employs standard crochet stitches to build three-dimensional forms that are then stuffed to create the finished toy. Amigurumi construction typically involves working in continuous rounds, using single crochet stitches as the primary stitch for creating tight, dense fabric that holds stuffing securely. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases that form the body, head, limbs, and other features characteristic of the ermine's distinctive weasel body structure.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn and a size F crochet hook. The worsted weight yarn provides an appropriate thickness for creating a medium-sized amigurumi toy with good stitch definition and fabric stability. While the pattern is specifically designed around these specifications, crafters have the flexibility to experiment with alternative yarn weights and hook sizes to adjust the finished size of the completed ermine toy. Additional materials typically required for amigurumi projects include fiberfill stuffing for filling the toy and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces.
