Erin – A Vintage Style Baby Bonnet by Julie Taylor
What is Being Made
Erin is an original vintage-inspired baby bonnet pattern designed by Julie Taylor. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming, classic bonnet suitable for infants, featuring a structured crown and decorative elements including a knitted flower and tie strings. The bonnet is designed with a timeless aesthetic that evokes traditional baby bonnets while remaining practical for modern wear.
Pattern Specifications and Sizing
The pattern includes multiple size options with varying yardage requirements. Yarn quantities range from approximately 30 grams for the smallest size up to 100 grams for the largest size. An additional 10–20 grams of double knitting yarn is needed for the decorative flower and bonnet strings. The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The primary construction technique used in this bonnet is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for vintage-style garments. The pattern employs standard knitting methods appropriate for shaping a fitted bonnet crown. Additional techniques include knitting a decorative flower element and creating functional tie strings, which add both aesthetic and practical value to the finished bonnet.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed for double knitting (DK) weight yarn, also known as 8 ply yarn, which knits to a standard tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over a 10×10 cm (4×4 inch) square in stocking stitch.
Recommended yarn options include:
- Rowan Purelife – 100% cotton, ideal for organic yarn preferences
- Rowan Amy Butler Belle – organic blend of 50% wool and 50% cotton
- Sirdar Snuggly – recommended for European knitters seeking easy-care properties
- Coats & Clarks Red Heart TLC Baby – suggested for US knitters prioritizing easy care
- Jo Sharp Classic DK – 100% wool option for US knitters
- Patons Fairytale – 100% wool option for UK knitters
The pattern accommodates various fiber content preferences, from practical cotton and cotton-blend options to luxurious pure wool alternatives, allowing knitters to choose based on desired care requirements, feel, and budget.
Needles Required
Two pairs of knitting needles are needed to complete this project: 3.25mm (US size 3) needles and 4mm (US size 6) needles. The use of two needle sizes allows for gauge control and shaping variations throughout the bonnet construction, a common technique in fitted hat patterns.
Pattern Format
Erin is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use and convenient for both digital and printed reference during knitting. The pattern was originally published by Julie Taylor on October 6, 2011, and remains an enduring design for vintage-style baby accessories.
