Erika Hat by Sue Whiting Designs

What is Being Made

Erika is a knitted hat designed by Sue Whiting Designs, offered as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat suitable for average-sized heads. The design showcases colorwork possibilities, with the option to knit the hat in either a single solid color or in multiple colors using a striped technique.

Knitting Techniques

The Erika hat employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern utilizes in-the-round knitting using double-pointed needles, which is a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments like hats. The pattern includes stranded colorwork as an optional feature, where multiple yarn colors are carried along the inside of the work to create striped effects. The designer notes that either side of the knitting can be used as the right side, offering flexibility in the finished appearance—knitters can choose to display the knit side of stockinette stitch or the purl side for a different aesthetic. When working with stripes, the pattern requires stranding unused yarn up the side of the work to maintain tension and structure.

Stitches Used

The Erika hat is constructed primarily using stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st in the pattern), which is the most common stitch for hat knitting. This stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the knit side and bumpy texture on the purl side. The pattern is worked in rounds rather than flat rows, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish.

Materials and Specifications

The Erika hat is designed to work with Drops Alpaca Boucle yarn in aran weight. For a multicolored version, the pattern calls for small amounts in five colors: A (cream 0100), B (grey 0517), C (pink 3250), D (brown 0602), and E (blue 7402). If knitting the hat in a single solid color, one 50-gram ball is sufficient, with the completed hat using approximately 30 grams of yarn. The pattern requires a set of four 5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles for working in the round.

Pattern Specifications

The hat is designed in one size to fit an average-size head. The recommended tension is 17 stitches and 22 rounds to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using 5 mm needles. Checking tension before beginning is essential to ensure the finished hat achieves the intended dimensions and fit. This intermediate-difficulty pattern is suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle in-the-round construction and potentially colorwork elements.
