Product Description
Envuelto (wrapped in Spanish) is a rectangular wrap with a seamless construction. The shawl is either knit in a luxurious baby alpaca, silk and cashmere lace weight mix or a size smaller in a fingering weight 100% merino yarn. Knit sideways with an I-cord edging it uses all of your yarn and knits easily enough to take anywhere. Envuelto Knit Wrap by Kimberly Gintar
What Is Being Made
Envuelto is a rectangular wrap shawl with a name meaning "wrapped" in Spanish. This seamless knit design features elegant proportions suitable for layering and styling versatility. The finished wrap measures approximately 86 cm (34 inches) wide by 142 cm (55.5 inches) long when made with lace weight yarn, or slightly smaller at 74 cm (29 inches) wide by 126 cm (49.5 inches) long after washing and blocking. The wrap is designed as a beginner-friendly project that knits up completely from a single skein of yarn with no seaming required.
Knitting Techniques
Envuelto employs a sideways knitting construction method, meaning the wrap is knit horizontally across its width rather than from top to bottom. This approach allows the knitter to use every last bit of yarn efficiently. The design features an I-cord edging worked as an integral part of the construction, creating a finished, polished edge without additional finishing steps. The seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, making this an excellent beginner project despite the delicate nature of the materials.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of this wrap. The gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch for both yarn weight options. The I-cord edging adds a refined textural element to the perimeter of the wrap.
Materials and Yarn
Envuelto offers flexibility in yarn selection, allowing knitters to choose based on preference and availability:
- Lace Weight Option: One skein of Nicole C. Méndez Luxury Lace in the Nebel colorway, featuring a luxurious blend of baby alpaca, silk, and cashmere at 600 meters per skein
- Fingering Weight Option: One skein of Wollmeise Twin in the Hortensia colorway, 100% merino wool at 466 meters per 150 grams
Needles and Notions
Needle size varies by yarn choice: US 5 (3.5 mm) needles are used with the lace weight yarn, while US 6 (4 mm) needles work with the fingering weight option. Additional notions include waste yarn for holding stitches during construction and a darning needle for weaving in ends and grafting the two ends together to complete the wrap.
Skill Level and Portability
Designed as a beginner-level project, Envuelto is accessible to knitters new to wrap construction. The straightforward stockinette stitch base and simple shaping make it an ideal portable project suitable for taking anywhere, whether traveling or working on the go.
