Embraceable Cowl / Scarf by Brenda Lavell
Project Overview
The Embraceable Cowl / Scarf is a versatile knitting pattern designed by Brenda Lavell that offers two styling options in a single project. This piece can be worn as a cozy cowl or neckwarmer when buttoned, or styled as an elegant scarf using a shawl pin. The design emphasizes comfort and rustic elegance, making it an ideal handmade gift or personal wardrobe staple.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a chunky, oversized cowl or scarf featuring a beautifully textured appearance. The finished piece is designed to be embraceable and cozy, with dimensions suitable for versatile wear. The cowl can be fastened for a snug neckwarmer effect or left open and secured with a shawl pin for a flowing scarf aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Embraceable Cowl / Scarf utilizes a herringbone stitch pattern as its primary textural element. This classic stitch creates a distinctive diagonal weaving appearance that adds visual interest and depth to the finished piece. The herringbone pattern is worked throughout the project and contributes to the rustic, elegant character of the design.
The pattern is classified as intermediate level, though it features a fairly quick knit timeline. The straightforward construction begins with casting on 21 stitches and working in the established pattern stitch. The use of super bulky yarn significantly reduces overall project time compared to finer yarn weights.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for 106 yards of super bulky yarn, requiring just one skein to complete the project. The sample shown uses Lions Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, an acrylic and wool blend that offers durability and easy care. Alternative yarn options are suggested, including Plymouth Mega Encore, Twinkle, or Blue Sky Bulky Alpaca, allowing crafters to choose based on fiber preference and desired texture.
Needles required are Size 19 US (15.5–16mm) knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The large needle size complements the super bulky yarn weight and contributes to the quick-knit nature of this project.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches in pattern, blocked. Achieving this gauge is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the cowl or scarf. Crafters are encouraged to knit a gauge swatch and block it before beginning the project to ensure accurate sizing.
Yarn Weight Characteristics
Super bulky yarn creates dramatic visual impact and rapid project completion. This weight category is ideal for beginners and experienced knitters seeking quick results. The substantial yarn thickness produces a fabric with excellent stitch definition, allowing the herringbone pattern to display prominently. Super bulky yarn also provides excellent insulation and warmth, making this cowl or scarf particularly suitable for cold weather wear.
