Product Description

This pattern is available individually and as part of the Myths and Fairytales eBook.

In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Wild Swans, Elisa is a beautiful princess with eleven brothers. When her brothers are cursed and turned into swans, she takes a vow of silence and must knit them shirts from stinging nettles to return them to human form. This is not at all like knitting stinging nettles, especially when using super soft silk and baby merino yarn!

The garter stitch body gives way to lace that resembles the flowers of the stinging nettle. Choose one color or two, large or small. The shallow triangular body with a crescent shaped lace edge makes this reversible shawl extremely versatile and easy to wear in a variety of ways.

This shawl is worked from the neck down beginning with a provisionally cast on garter stitch tab. Four increases are made every right side row and two every wrong side row. In the Nettles section, all of the increases are moved to the edge of the

Elisa Shawl by Tori Gurbisz

What is Being Made

The Elisa shawl is a knitted triangular shawl inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans, featuring the character Elisa who knits shirts from stinging nettles to break a curse. This design translates that narrative into a beautiful, wearable accessory with a shallow triangular body and crescent-shaped lace edge. The shawl is reversible and versatile, suitable for multiple styling options and wear methods.

Design Options and Sizing

The Elisa shawl is available in two size options:

  • Small (Two-Color): 52 inch (132 cm) wingspan with 17 inch (43 cm) depth
  • Large: 70 inch (178 cm) wingspan with 23 inch (58.5 cm) depth

Knitters can choose to work the design in a single color or combine two colors for visual interest and complexity.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Elisa shawl employs a combination of fundamental and decorative knitting techniques. The body of the shawl is worked in garter stitch, a basic yet textured stitch created by knitting every row. This provides a solid, reversible foundation for the piece. The design transitions from this simple stitch pattern to lace sections that form the crescent-shaped edge, creating a delicate visual element that resembles the flowers of the stinging nettle plant. This contrast between the dense garter stitch body and the open, airy lace edge makes the shawl both structurally interesting and aesthetically striking.

Yarn and Materials

The Elisa shawl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight category that creates a fabric with excellent drape and delicacy. The recommended fiber blend combines super soft silk and baby merino, creating a luxurious, comfortable yarn that is gentle against the skin. This fiber choice is particularly appropriate given the shawl's narrative inspiration, as the silk and merino blend provides softness in stark contrast to the concept of knitting with stinging nettles.

Gauge and Needle Considerations

Gauge flexibility is built into this pattern design, making it accessible to knitters with varying tension. The pattern notes that gauge is not crucial to the project's success. However, for knitters who tend to work tightly or who prefer a more open, lacy fabric, adjusting needle size upward by one to two sizes from the recommended needles can achieve the desired fabric characteristics. This flexibility allows for customization based on individual knitting style and aesthetic preferences.

Difficulty Level

The Elisa shawl is classified as an advanced knitting project. While the garter stitch sections are beginner-friendly, the lace portions require experience reading lace charts, managing yarn overs, decreases, and maintaining stitch counts across multiple rows. The combination of techniques and the need to execute lace patterning with precision makes this design best suited for experienced knitters.
