Product Description
128 peg 1/2" gauge x loom was used to make this elephant with a minimum of 24 pegs used and a max of 48 pegs. This is a challenging elephant but well worth the effort when a full 2 part video tutorials are provided along with the written instructions. I used the Lions Brand Vel-Luxe yarn, it can be testy and if you so choose to do that yarn with this project be gentle, you can use a bulky to worsted yarn for this project. The results might be slightly smaller. You will want some paracord and lots of stitch markers for this project. You can try to do this on a regular loom but you will need to be aware of the adjustments such as taking 12 stitches off for the legs to accommodate a 24 peg loom. Also do a straight number of rows for the back of the head rather than the increase. You can internally decrease for the trunk and be able to make this on some round or an adjustable loom. Cute and fun pattern!!!
Elephant X Loom by Scarlett Royale
Project Overview
Elephant X Loom is an advanced knitting toy pattern designed by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF provides comprehensive instructions for creating a stuffed elephant using loom knitting techniques. The project combines traditional toy-making with contemporary loom knitting methods, resulting in a three-dimensional plush figure suitable for experienced fiber crafters.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a soft, sculptural elephant toy through loom knitting. The finished piece consists of a shaped head and body that are assembled together, with added embellishments including safety eyes and polyfil stuffing to create a complete, huggable toy.
Loom and Equipment Requirements
The pattern is designed for use with an x loom at any gauge, though the designer used a 96-peg 1/2" gauge universal x loom for the original sample. Crafters will need:
- An x loom with sufficient peg capacity
- A looming hook (Lions Brand Vel-Lux looming hook recommended)
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern progress
- A crafters needle for weaving in ends and assembly
- Paracord for structural support during construction
Yarn and Materials
The pattern requires a minimum of 120 yards of yarn in aran weight that matches the gauge of your chosen loom. The designer used Lions Brand Vel-Lux yarn for the original project. Additional materials include polyfil stuffing for filling the toy and safety eyes for facial features.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Elephant X Loom employs advanced loom knitting techniques that go beyond basic knit and purl stitches. The pattern utilizes specialized wedge-based shaping methods essential for creating the three-dimensional form of the elephant.
Wedge Decrease (WD)
The Wedge Decrease technique is used to reduce stitches and shape the toy. This method involves moving the wedge down one notch to the next set of pegs, then transferring the last set of stitches over to the wedge pegs on each side. The final step requires knitting the two stitches together on the wedge pegs, creating a decrease line that helps form contours in the elephant's body and head.
Wedge Increase (WI)
The Wedge Increase is a more complex technique used to add stitches and expand sections of the toy. This multi-step process begins with twin knitting the first wedge peg and moving the resulting stitch to the previous peg. The crafter then knits the two wedge pegs together, followed by twin knitting the next peg beside the wedge peg and moving that stitch to the second wedge peg. An additional knit stitch is worked on the peg beside the second wedge peg that was just twin knitted. The wedge is then moved up one set of pegs, and any extra loop beside the first wedge peg is placed onto an empty peg. These increases allow for gradual expansion of the elephant's form.
Construction and Assembly
The pattern is organized into two main sections with accompanying video tutorials. The head is constructed first, followed by the body. Once both pieces are complete and stuffed with polyfil, they are assembled together using the crafters needle and yarn to create the finished toy. The video tutorials provide step-by-step visual guidance for both the head construction and the body assembly process.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, making it suitable for experienced loom knitters who are comfortable with specialized techniques and three-dimensional shaping. Familiarity with wedge increases and decreases, as well as toy assembly methods, is essential for successful completion of this project.
