This downloadable PDF pattern from Hoooked guides crafters through creating "Mo", an adorable solid crocheted elephant toy. Designed as an intermediate-level crochet project, Mo is a three-dimensional amigurumi-style stuffed animal worked in Hoooked RibbonXL, a super chunky recycled cotton ribbon yarn. The finished toy is chunky, tactile, and stylish — a perfect handmade gift or decorative piece for a nursery or child's room.
Hoooked RibbonXL is a 100% recycled cotton super chunky ribbon yarn produced in Europe. It is lightweight yet very sturdy, elastic in texture, and quick to work with. RibbonXL does not itch or scratch, making it ideal for toys that will be handled by children. It is also machine washable, which is a practical advantage for a children's toy. The pattern calls for 2 balls of RibbonXL, and the kit includes at least two colour shades — with the instructions referencing a darker colour used for the legs and a lighter or contrasting colour for the body.
The pattern produces a single crocheted stuffed elephant named "Mo". The construction is worked in separate pieces that are then joined and assembled. The elephant is built from four legs worked individually, a body that is crocheted continuously from the joined legs, and additional components such as the head, trunk, and ears (referenced in the broader pattern). The result is a solid, sculptural toy with a satisfying chunky appearance thanks to the RibbonXL ribbon yarn.
The legs are crocheted first, each beginning with a magic ring (losse opzetlus) or a foundation chain of 2, with 5 single crochet stitches worked into the second chain from the hook. Each leg is increased over several rounds to reach 15 stitches and then worked straight for additional rounds. The first three legs are fastened off with a long tail left for seaming, while the fourth leg remains live on the hook. The crocheter then joins all four legs in sequence — working 8 stitches across the fourth leg, picking up each subsequent leg and working 10 stitches across each — to form a continuous round of 40 stitches that becomes the base of the body.
The body is then worked in the round, increasing to 50 stitches at its widest point, before a series of decrease rounds progressively reduce the stitch count: from 50 down to 45, then 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, and finally 10 stitches, using paired decreases at regular intervals. The body is stuffed before closing, and the legs are also filled with stuffing. The loose yarn tails from the legs are used to sew the legs together at the centre join for a neat, secure finish.
