Product Description

My East Burn Beanie is my second release in a series of hat patterns all inspired by the flora, fauna, life and countryside in and around Northmavine in Shetland. A place I’m proud to call home! The East Burn Beanie was inspired by a small woodland just a few miles from our home – East Burn Woods – which we often walk through when we are craving trees! The colours are inspired by the vivid changing hues we see there throughout the year – the leaves and pines, the heather and grasses. The beanie starts with a corrugated rib and is worked entirely in the round with a pattern based on traditional Fairisle motifs. It is has been designed to pull down low over your ears to protect them from the biting North winds! Otherwise it can be worn further back on your head as a slouchy style beanie.

East Burn Beanie by Olach Designs

Project Overview

The East Burn Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted hat pattern inspired by East Burn Woods in Northmavine, Shetland. This downloadable PDF pattern is the second release in a series of hat designs celebrating the flora, fauna, and countryside of Shetland. The beanie features a versatile design that can be worn pulled low over the ears for protection from cold winds or positioned further back on the head for a slouchy style.

Design Inspiration and Colorwork

The East Burn Beanie draws its color palette from the vivid, changing hues observed throughout the year in East Burn Woods—featuring the warm tones of autumn leaves, deep greens of pines, purples of heather, and golden grasses. The pattern incorporates traditional Fairisle motifs, a classic knitting technique that creates intricate colorwork by carrying multiple yarn colors across rows and selecting which color to knit with at each stitch.

Construction Techniques

This beanie is worked entirely in the round, a method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The pattern begins with a corrugated rib, a textured ribbed edging that provides elasticity and a polished appearance at the brim. The corrugated rib technique alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific pattern to create pronounced vertical ridges while maintaining stretch.

Stitches and Methods

  • Corrugated Rib: An elastic edging worked in the round that combines knit and purl stitches for texture and stretch
  • Fairisle Colorwork: Traditional stranded colorwork technique requiring the management of multiple yarn colors within rows
  • Knitting in the Round: Seamless construction using circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPN)

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The East Burn Beanie is designed to be worked with Jamiesons of Shetland Spindrift, a 100% pure Shetland wool yarn. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, a medium-weight yarn suitable for garments with good drape and warmth. The Spindrift yarn provides approximately 105 meters per 25-gram ball.

Needles and Tools Required

  • Ribbing Section: 1 set of 2.5mm double-pointed needles (DPN) or preferred method for working in the round with wool
  • Main Pattern: 1 set of 3mm double-pointed needles or preferred method for working in the round
  • Yarn Quantity: 1 × 25-gram ball of each color shade used in the pattern

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in working in the round and experience with basic colorwork techniques. Familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors and reading chart-based patterns is beneficial for successful completion of the East Burn Beanie.
