Product Description

Whether you are seeing the Dragons of Kelsingra from the books of Robin Hobb, the dragons of Alagaesia in The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, the Red Dragons of Stychs from Terie Garrison's Dragonspawn Cycle, or any other beautifully winged dragons, this shawl is sure to be a welcome bit of cover from the breezes of the winged beauties flying overhead.

Three variations: The short variation (which has its own PDF file) that takes only a 440 yd ball of yarn, the medium variation, and the long variation that gives a longer lace edging to the shawl. All versions will be available for download upon purchase so you can choose the length you prefer.

This shawl also can be made with lace weight, sport, or DK weight yarns. Simply add more yarn for the sport/DK weight versions and adjust your needle size for the yarn you are using.

Dragon Flight Knitted Shawl by Elizabeth Ravenwood

What Is Being Made

Dragon Flight is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design created by Elizabeth Ravenwood. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl worked from a charted design, offering knitters a sophisticated project that combines traditional shawl construction with decorative embellishment options.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Dragon Flight shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes chart-based construction, requiring knitters to follow detailed stitch charts for accurate pattern placement. The design features stitch marker placement at strategic points to help maintain pattern alignment throughout the project. Knitters have the option to incorporate bead placement into their work, adding dimensional embellishment to the finished piece. The pattern also includes nupp stitches as an alternative decorative technique, allowing for textural variation in the shawl's appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Dragon Flight pattern is constructed primarily in stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the shawl fabric. The pattern incorporates SK2P (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) decreases, which are essential for shaping and creating the pattern's visual elements. The center spine of the plain version features heart motifs, while beaded and nupp versions showcase different decorative treatments in these same areas. The pattern provides three distinct chart options—Charts A and B for the beaded version, Charts A1 and B1 for the nupp version, and Charts A2 and B2 for the plain version—allowing crafters to choose their preferred level of embellishment.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: 440 yards (402 meters) of fingering weight yarn in a 4-ply construction
  • Needles: US Size 4 / 3.50 mm knitting needles, or the size required to achieve proper gauge
  • Stitch Markers: 4 regular stitch markers and 4 locking stitch markers or coilless safety pins for tracking pattern sections
  • Beads (Optional): Approximately 364 beads in Size 6/0 or 8/0, used only in the beaded version of the pattern
  • Gauge: 7 stitches per inch (2.5 cm) in stockinette stitch when unblocked; however, gauge flexibility is noted as not critical for this particular design

Design Variations

Elizabeth Ravenwood's Dragon Flight pattern offers three distinct versions to suit different knitting preferences and skill levels within the intermediate range. The beaded version incorporates Size 6/0 or 8/0 beads throughout the pattern for added sparkle and dimension. The nupp version uses nupp stitches—decorative bobble-like formations created by working multiple stitches into one stitch and then decreasing them back down—as the primary embellishment technique. The plain version omits both beads and nupps, instead featuring heart motifs along the center spine for visual interest without additional embellishment. Each version includes its own corresponding charts, ensuring knitters can follow their chosen variation with clarity and precision.
