Diagonal Yoke Sweater – Knitting Pattern for Women by Debbie Bliss in Cashmerino DK

This Diagonal Yoke Sweater is a sophisticated women's pullover knitting pattern designed by Debbie Bliss and worked in her signature Cashmerino DK yarn. The design is distinguished by its striking diagonal cable yoke, which creates a bold, directional texture across the upper body and gives the garment its name. Rated as an advanced knitting project, this pattern rewards experienced knitters with a beautifully structured, luxurious sweater suitable for cooler seasons.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a seamed, set-in-style raglan sweater with a distinctive diagonal cable yoke panel. It is sized to fit a wide range of chest measurements, from 76–81 cm (30–32 in) up to 137–142 cm (54–56 in), making it accessible across many body types. Finished chest measurements range from 90 cm (35½ in) to 148 cm (58¼ in), with positive ease built in for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

The finished garment features:

  • Centre front lengths ranging from 49 cm (19¼ in) to 65 cm (25½ in) depending on size
  • Sleeve lengths from 44 cm (17¼ in) to 47 cm (18½ in)
  • Raglan-style armhole and sleeve shaping worked with paired decreases for a neat, tailored finish

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several advanced construction and shaping techniques that make it suitable for experienced knitters:

  • Cable knitting – The hallmark of this design. Cables are worked throughout the yoke using a cable needle, creating the signature diagonal texture. Both C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) crossings are used, where two stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held either at the back or front of the work before knitting, producing the characteristic twisted rope effect.
  • Worked flat (back and forth) – All pieces are knitted flat on straight or circular needles, meaning the knitter works right-side and wrong-side rows alternately rather than in the round.
  • Seamed construction – Individual pieces (back, front, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then sewn together, a traditional method that provides excellent structure and shape retention in the finished garment.
  • Raglan and armhole shaping – Armholes are shaped by casting off stitches at the beginning of rows, followed by paired raglan decrease rows. Right-side decreases use p2tog and p2tog tbl, while wrong-side rows employ skpo and k2tog, creating mirrored, symmetrical shaping on both edges.
  • Make One (m1) increases – Used for sleeve and body shaping, worked by picking up and knitting into the back of the loop lying between stitches.
  • s2kpo double decrease – A centred double decrease where two stitches are slipped as if to work k2tog, one stitch is knitted, and the slipped stitches are passed over, used for precise shaping at key points.

Stitches Used

The pattern draws on a combination of fundamental and more complex stitch techniques:

  • Cable pattern (cable patt) – The primary stitch pattern forming the diagonal yoke, constructed from C4B and C4F crossings worked over a knit and purl background
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) – The foundational stitches used throughout all sections of the garment
  • skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) – A left-leaning single decrease
  • p2tog and p2tog tbl – Purl decreases worked on right-side rows for raglan shaping, the latter worked through the back loops for a mirrored lean
  • k2tog – A standard right-leaning knit decrease used in
