Product Description

This is a great little project that will be fun and very quick to work up. You will need a few yards of Noro "Kureyon". With about 110 yards per skein, one skein should make about 6 cases - great little gifts for kids! Kureyon has fabulous colors and an organic kind of texture. It's not very soft, but is durable and gorgeous. The little handle can be hooked through a belt loop or over a bag handle and buttoned. Very handy, indeed. This pattern matches my LA Tote pattern, also available on Ravelry.

Please note that the second photo shows the cell phone case on the LA Tote. The LA Tote is not included in this pattern.

Detachable Cell Phone Pocket by Sharon Mooney

Project Overview

This is a knitted detachable cell phone pocket designed by Sharon Mooney, perfect for securing your mobile device to a bag, belt loop, or other fabric surface. The pocket features a functional handle attachment and a button closure system, making it both practical and stylish for everyday use.

Finished Dimensions

When flattened with ribbing slightly stretched, the pocket measures approximately 3½" wide by 3½" tall. The attached handle measures about 6" long. Please note that both the pocket and handle will stretch slightly when your phone is inserted and the pocket hangs from a bag or belt loop, so measurements are variable based on your specific phone height.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to create a structured, functional accessory. The pattern utilizes double pointed needles for working in the round, which allows for seamless construction of the pocket body. Ribbing is incorporated into the design to provide stretch and recovery, ensuring the pocket maintains its shape while accommodating phones of varying sizes. The handle is constructed as an integrated component, and the pattern includes techniques for securing yarn and managing stitches throughout the knitting process.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern uses standard knitting stitches worked on double pointed needles. The ribbed sections create elasticity, and waste yarn is employed as a temporary stitch holder during construction. The pocket incorporates a button closure system, which is attached using basic sewing techniques after the knitting is complete.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Approximately 1 skein of Noro "Kureyon" (100% Wool, 100 meters, 50 grams) in color 221. One skein provides enough yarn for at least 6 cell phone pockets, making this an economical project.
  • Needles: One set of five size US 9 double pointed knitting needles for working in the round
  • Notions: Split ring stitch marker, 18" of waste yarn in a contrasting color and similar weight, one 7/8" button, sewing thread to match one of the colors in the yarn, and a sewing needle with an appropriately sized eye
  • Additional Tools: Yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically Noro "Kureyon," which is a 100% wool fiber. Worsted weight yarn works well for creating structured, durable accessories that maintain their shape. The wool content provides natural elasticity and durability, making it ideal for a frequently-used phone pocket that will experience regular stretching and handling.

Skill Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with double pointed needles. The combination of circular knitting, ribbed sections, and button attachment requires foundational knitting knowledge but offers an excellent opportunity to practice essential techniques while creating a practical, wearable item.
