The Pythian Games, one of the four Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece, were held in Delphi every 4 years, 2 years after the Olympiads. These games honored Apollo and the winner was awarded a laurel wreath (the Olympic Games honored Zeus with an olive wreath as the prize for the winner).

The fans in the shawl signify rays of sunshine. The ancient Greeks believed Apollo to be the fod of sun & light. The chain loops represent the many athletes competing eequally in hte various events. The lower border of "laurel tips" represents the laurel wreath given to the winner.

The stitch combinations are named to make it easier to recognize the grouping. Each are carefully explained in the special stitches box on each page they occur.

What is Being Made

The Delphi Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl inspired by ancient Greek mythology and the Pythian Games held in Delphi. This intermediate-level design combines decorative fan motifs with a bordered construction, creating a sophisticated accessory with historical and symbolic meaning woven throughout its structure.

Design Inspiration and Symbolism

The shawl draws its aesthetic and conceptual elements from the Pythian Games, one of the four Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece, which were held every 4 years in honor of Apollo. The design incorporates several meaningful symbolic elements:

  • Fan motifs represent rays of sunshine, honoring Apollo's role as the god of sun and light in ancient Greek mythology
  • Chain-3 loops throughout the pattern symbolize the many athletes competing equally in the various events of the games
  • Laurel tip border along the lower edge represents the laurel wreath awarded to the winners of the Pythian Games (distinct from the olive wreath given at the Olympic Games)

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate crochet project employs fan stitch construction as its primary decorative element. The shawl is worked in segments, allowing for a modular building approach that adds visual interest and structural variety. The design incorporates chain-3 loops as a foundational stitch element, creating openwork sections that contribute to the shawl's drape and airiness. The edging features specialized laurel tip stitches that frame the lower border, requiring intermediate-level stitch manipulation and shaping skills.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Delphi Shawl requires a total of 621 yards of DK weight yarn across two coordinating yarns:

  • Main Color (MC): Wisdom Yarns Limerick in "#31804 Purple" — 100% merino wool, 175 yards per 50 grams, requiring 2 balls (approximately 621 yards total across segments)
  • Contrast Color (CC): Louisa Harding Grace Harmonies — 50% wool and 50% silk blend, 110 yards per 50 grams, used for edging and select segments

The yarn is distributed across five segments, with Segment 1 using 35 yards, Segment 3 using 84 yards, and Segment 5 plus all edging consuming 228 yards of the main color. The silk-wool blend contrast yarn adds luxury and subtle sheen to the finished piece, while the merino wool main color provides warmth and elasticity suitable for a wearable shawl.

Finished Project Characteristics

This DK weight shawl works up to an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for crocheters with solid foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-segment construction and specialty border techniques. The combination of fan stitches, chain loops, and laurel tip edging creates a refined, historically-inspired accessory that celebrates classical Greek artistry and athletic tradition.
