I think this will be my last Easter knit of the year and I think Darwin is going to be my favourite one so far! Admittedly, he looks a little sad, but that’s nothing a few hugs won’t cure!
Doesn’t he look dapper in his little dungarees and his stylish flatcap?
Darwin Duck is a charming knitted toy duck standing 20 cm tall, designed by Cilla Webb. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a three-dimensional stuffed duck character perfect for children or as a decorative handmade gift. The finished toy features distinct color blocking with yellow, green, and grey sections, along with detailed facial features including button eyes and embroidered or crocheted pink cheeks.
This knitting pattern employs several fundamental techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction uses stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, finished appearance ideal for toys. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases throughout the pattern. Knit front and back (Kfb) increases are used to add stitches for expanding sections, while knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) decreases create shaping and definition. The pattern uses bracketed repeat instructions and asterisk notation for efficient pattern reading. Embellishment techniques include button attachment for eyes and crocheted or embroidered details for the cheeks, adding personality to the finished duck.
Darwin Duck is constructed using DK weight yarn in multiple colors from the Sirdar Snuggly range. The primary color is Sirdar Snuggly Bouclette Daffodil (131) in yellow, requiring 25g for the duck's main body. Sirdar Snuggly DK Summer Lime (260) in green comprises 20g, used for accent sections. Sirdar Snuggly DK Cloud (487) in grey requires 20g for additional color blocking. Small quantities of DK yarn in pink, black, and white complete the facial features. The pattern calls for 3.5mm straight needles as the primary tool, with a crochet hook used to create the textured pink cheeks. Additional supplies include toy stuffing for creating a soft, three-dimensional form, a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and two small buttons measuring 1cm in diameter for the eyes.
