I designed this little cardi for Daisy.
I specialize in one piece knitting with minimal seaming. This little cardi is designed to be knit flat, in one piece.
The borders are moss stitch, this is done by casting on an odd number of stitches and beginning each row with k1,p1 repeating this to the end.

Daisy's Tiny Cardi by JaneTerzzaDesigns
What is Being Made
Daisy's Tiny Cardi is a knitted cardigan designed for infants and toddlers, available in five graduated sizes ranging from newborn (0/3 months) through toddler (2/4 years). The garment features a chest measurement range of 18 inches (46 centimeters) to 26 inches (66 centimeters), making it suitable for babies from birth through early childhood. This cardigan is specifically engineered as a one-piece construction knit flat, minimizing the need for seaming and simplifying the finishing process.
Construction Method and Design Approach
This pattern exemplifies the designer's specialization in one-piece knitting with minimal seaming. The cardigan is knit flat from a single piece of fabric rather than being assembled from multiple components, which reduces finishing work and creates a more seamless garment. The design incorporates strategic placement of markers and shaping techniques to create the necessary structure for a fitted baby cardigan without requiring traditional seaming methods.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Moss Stitch – Used for the cardigan borders, created by casting on an odd number of stitches and alternating knit and purl stitches (*k1, p1*) throughout each row. This textured stitch provides a decorative, non-rolling edge.
- Stocking Stitch – The primary fabric stitch used for the contrasting color sections, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance.
- Knit (k) – The fundamental knit stitch forming the base of the fabric.
- Purl (p) – Used in combination with knit stitches for texture and pattern work.
- Knit Front and Back (kf&b) – An increase technique used for shaping the garment.
- Knit Two Together (k2tog) – A decrease technique for shaping and finishing edges.
- Wrap and Turn (w&t) – An advanced technique used for creating smooth shaping transitions in the one-piece construction.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in two colors. The main yarn requires 100 to 150 grams depending on the size selected, while the contrasting yarn requires 50 to 100 grams. DK (double knitting) weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape, making it ideal for baby garments that require both softness and structure.
Needles and Gauge
The cardigan is worked on 4mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern: 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in width and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in length. Maintaining accurate gauge ensures the finished cardigan will fit properly across all five size options.
Difficulty Level
Daisy's Tiny Cardi is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the one-piece construction method, use of wrap-and-turn shaping, and color changes require solid knitting skills and understanding of garment construction principles. This pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitch techniques and are ready to tackle more complex shaping and construction methods.
Pattern Features and Sizing
The pattern provides comprehensive sizing across five distinct measurements, allowing customization for different ages and growth stages. Cast-on stitch counts range from 53 to 73 stitches depending on desired chest size, with proportional adjustments to row counts for borders and color sections (ranging from 10 to 18 rows based on size). This graduated sizing system ensures proper fit throughout the infant and toddler years.
