Product Description
These face scrubbies are washable and reusable. They are made from 100% DK cotton. Each scrubbie uses 9g/18m of yarn.
It is constructed in the round with 4 rounds in total. Make sure to turn after both round's 2 and 3. This will mean that the cluster stitches are worked on the wrong side of the work so when the work is turned around the puffed side of the stitch is on the right side of the work.
Stitches used - UK terms - puff, tr clusters, dc, htr, tr sts and invisible join
Finished size - 8.5cm wide
Gauge/Tension is not important for the pattern although it might effect yarn amount used.
Gauge/Tension is measured on finished item - 2.5 rounds from centre is 2.5 cm.
The scrubbies in the pattern use an Australian Cotton DK weight yarn from Lincraft. The yarns suggested to use are a similar meterage per 50g so they should produce a scrubbie in a similar size if gauge is met.
Alternative yarn weight - Aran/10ply/worsted weight cotton uses a 4.5mm hook, measures 10cm/4ins, and uses 18g/36m yarn.
Dahlia Face Scrubbie by Amy Ziehn
What Is Being Made
The Dahlia Face Scrubbie is a small, decorative crocheted cleaning accessory designed for gentle facial exfoliation. This beginner-friendly project creates a finished scrubbie measuring 8.5cm across, making it a practical and portable addition to any skincare routine. The compact size and functional design make it suitable for daily use or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners while incorporating decorative elements that add visual interest. The scrubbie is constructed using a magic ring foundation, which creates a neat center point for the circular design. The pattern builds outward in rounds from the center, with tension measured at 2.5cm per 2.5 rounds from the center point. Notably, tension is not critical in this pattern, making it forgiving for newer crocheters and allowing for slight variations without affecting the final result.
The construction method uses an invisible join technique to seamlessly connect rounds, creating a polished finished edge. This professional-looking join is detailed in accompanying photo instructions provided in a separate PDF document, allowing crafters to achieve clean transitions between rounds.
Stitches Used
The Dahlia Face Scrubbie incorporates a variety of crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Double crochet (dc) – a fundamental stitch providing structure and density
- Half treble crochet (htr) – used for medium height and drape
- Treble crochet (tr) – creates taller stitches for dimensional elements
- Chain (ch) – forms the foundation and creates spaces within the pattern
- Slip stitch (ss) – joins rounds and secures stitches
- Puff stitch – a special stitch created by repeating yarn overs and loop pulls to form a textured, dimensional element ideal for creating the scrubbing surface
- Treble crochet cluster (tr cluster) – multiple treble crochets worked together into the same stitch, creating a decorative clustered effect that enhances the dahlia flower appearance
Materials
The Dahlia Face Scrubbie is crafted using DK weight cotton yarn, also known as 8 ply, which is ideal for facial scrubbers due to its gentle texture and durability. Each scrubbie requires only 9 grams of yarn, equivalent to 18 meters, making this an economical project that uses minimal yardage. A 4mm or G-size crochet hook is used to work the DK weight yarn, creating appropriately sized stitches for the finished 8.5cm diameter scrubbie. The cotton fiber choice ensures the scrubbie is suitable for facial use, as cotton is breathable, washable, and gentle on delicate skin.
Difficulty Level
Designed as a beginner-level pattern, the Dahlia Face Scrubbie is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The forgiving nature of the pattern—with non-critical tension requirements—allows beginners to focus on learning fundamental techniques without worrying about precise gauge. While the pattern does include special stitches like puff stitches and treble clusters, these are explained within the pattern and provide an opportunity for beginners to expand their stitch repertoire in a manageable project.
