Product Description
This killer knit makes a great addition to any kid's bedroom, and a “splashing-ly" good comfort cushion come bedtime. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the whale is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). The eye and cheek patches are embroidered using duplicate stitch (Swiss darning) and charts are included. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Cute Whale Cushion Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
Project Overview
The Cute Whale Cushion is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Amanda Berry that creates a charming stuffed toy cushion perfect for children's bedrooms. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a decorative and functional piece that combines playful design with practical comfort, making it an ideal addition to any child's room as both a decorative accent and a cozy bedtime companion.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a three-dimensional whale cushion that functions as both a decorative toy and a functional cushion. The finished piece features a killer whale design with distinctive eye and cheek patches that are added through embroidery work after the main knitting is complete. The cushion is stuffed with toy filling to create a soft, huggable plush toy suitable for children.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation of the whale construction using basic knit stitches to form the body
- Decreasing: Knit two stitches together (k2tog) to shape the whale's form and create the proper three-dimensional structure
- Seaming: Joining pieces together using a darning or tapestry needle to assemble the whale body
- Duplicate Stitch (Swiss Darning): An embroidery technique used to add the eye and cheek patches onto the finished knitted surface, allowing for detailed colorwork without the complexity of stranded knitting
- Stitch Holder Techniques: Managing active stitches during construction
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses fundamental knitting abbreviations including K for knit stitch and k2tog for knit two stitches together, which is a basic decrease method. Charts are provided within the pattern to guide the duplicate stitch embroidery work for the facial features.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Cute Whale Cushion is knitted using 100% acrylic DK yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). The pattern requires 100g skeins in two shades—the sample shown was created in Hayfield Bonus DK in Black and White, though any similar quality DK acrylic yarn is suitable as an alternative.
Tools and Notions Required
- Needles: A pair of 4mm (US 6) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm
- Seaming Tool: A darning or tapestry needle for joining the knitted pieces together
- Stuffing: Two 200g bags of toy filling to create the cushion's plush interior
- Safety Features: Two 15mm toy safety eyes for the whale's face
- Stitch Management: A stitch holder for managing stitches during construction
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping techniques, seaming, and embellishment work. The combination of knitting construction, assembly, and embroidery techniques provides a well-rounded project that builds multiple skill sets.
