Product Description
This cardigan is knitted flat from the top down with a stranded ombré heart motif across the yoke. The cardigan starts with an i-cord cast-on in a contrasting colour, before increasing across the yoke and then working the heart motif. Stitches for the sleeves are set aside on stitch holders before continuing with the body. An i-cord button band is picked up and knitted along the front edges and the i-cord cast-off continues along the bottom edge of the cardigan in a contrasting colour. Cute and complementary buttons finish the cardigan.
Croí Cardigan by Ciara Ní Reachtnín
What is Being Made
The Croí Cardigan is a baby or child's cardigan featuring a distinctive stranded colorwork heart motif across the yoke. This knit-flat design combines practical construction with decorative elements, creating a charming garment suitable for young children. The cardigan is finished with an icord button band and complementary buttons for a polished, professional appearance.
Construction Technique
This cardigan is knit flat from the top down, a method that allows for easy fitting adjustments and intuitive shaping. The construction begins with an icord cast on worked in a contrasting color, which creates a decorative and flexible edge. Increases are worked across the yoke section to create the necessary width for the garment body. Once the yoke shaping is complete, stitches for the sleeves are set aside on stitch holders, allowing the knitter to continue working the body independently. An icord button band is picked up and knit along both front edges, and the icord cast off continues along the bottom edge of the cardigan in a contrasting color, creating a coordinated, finished look throughout.
Stitches and Colorwork
The primary stitch used in this design is Stocking Stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for showcasing colorwork. The cardigan features stranded colorwork in an ombre heart pattern across the yoke, a technique where two colors are carried across the row to create the design. The icord technique is used for both the cast on and cast off edges, as well as the button band, providing decorative and durable finishing details in a contrasting color.
Materials and Gauge
This intermediate-level pattern is designed to be worked with Rooster Baby Rooster yarn in 4ply (sport weight), which provides 125 meters per 50-gram ball. The recommended gauge is 25 stitches by 36 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in Stocking Stitch when blocked. Needles required include two 3.25mm circular needles measuring 100 or 120 centimeters, plus a set of 3.25mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the icord elements. Additional notions include 3 buttons, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, 11 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and 2 stitch holders for managing sleeve stitches during construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including increases, stitch holders, and circular needle work. The stranded colorwork and icord techniques add complexity beyond beginner level, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skills in colorwork and decorative finishing methods.
