A little crocodile to wrap around your neck – he bites his own tail instead of you! Plenty long enough for an adult as well as a child.
One of a series of scarves for children (and adults with a quirky sense of humour!). All have a head with a mouth that you can thread the tail through.
Use your choice of DK/8 ply yarn: 100 gms of the main colour plus a few grams of white for his teeth.
Note: this pattern uses “joggle” eyes which are unsafe for children 3 years or younger – embroider the eyes in yarn for under 3's.
The Crocodile Scarf is a playful, wearable knitted design created for kids and the young at heart. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a charming crocodile that wraps around the wearer's neck, with the crocodile's mouth positioned to bite its own tail rather than the wearer. The finished scarf measures approximately 80 cm long from nose to tail and 13 cm wide at the middle of the body, making it plenty long enough for both children and adults.
This is a knitting project worked primarily in garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch is an excellent choice for this design as it produces a dense, textured fabric with horizontal ridges that complement the crocodile's dimensional appearance. The pattern uses a combination of increasing and decreasing techniques to shape the crocodile's body, creating the characteristic tapered form from head to tail.
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate skill level. Key stitches and methods include:
The Crocodile Scarf is worked in DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply), a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for this design. The pattern requires:
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 34 rows over 10 cm when worked on 4.5 mm (US 7) needles in garter stitch using DK weight yarn. Achieving the correct gauge is important to ensure the finished scarf matches the intended dimensions and drapes properly when worn.
This whimsical pattern combines practical wearability with imaginative design. The crocodile's mouth is positioned to grip its own tail, creating an engaging and playful accessory that appeals to children while remaining charming enough for adults. The use of contrasting white or yellow yarn for the teeth adds visual interest and personality to the finished piece, while the sew-on joggle eyes provide an expressive finishing touch that brings the crocodile character to life.
