Product Description
This is a Pattern for a super cute crochet backpack, Drawstring bag. There are 2 Design options both are worked with 2 strands of DK yarn held together. Option A is worked with a 5mm hook with 2 colours the top finished with a crab stitch and the strings are attached differently. Option B is worked with a Crochet hook 4mm in 5 different colours with a shell stitch ending. Option A would be a bit looser and B a bit tighter. How to twist a cord is not explained.
My patterns are all in German and English, in US terms. My patterns are all created by myself which I really enjoy. It takes a while to create a pattern, knit it and write everything down but if there are any issues please do not hesitate to send me a message either here or on my Instagram account _Lovelyyarns.
Crochet Backpack by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a crochet backpack with drawstring closure. The design offers two distinct options, allowing crafters to choose between a looser or more structured finished garment. Both versions create a functional backpack suitable for everyday use, with approximate finished dimensions of 35cm in height.
Design Options Overview
The pattern includes two complete design variations that differ in hook size, color schemes, finishing techniques, and final drape. Option A produces a slightly looser backpack, while Option B creates a more compact, structured result. Both options are constructed using the same foundational approach of holding two strands of DK yarn together throughout the project.
Option A Details
Finished Dimensions: Approximately 35cm high, 34cm broad, with a circular base circumference of 22cm.
Color Scheme: Worked in 2 colors (vintage pink and white), creating a two-tone design.
Techniques and Stitches: This version features a crab stitch finish at the top, which creates a decorative, textured border. The drawstring attachment method differs from Option B. Please note that the pattern does not include instructions for twisting a cord, so crafters should have prior knowledge of this technique or reference external resources.
Hook and Materials: Uses a 5mm crochet hook. Requires DK cotton yarn (50gr equals 125m per skein), with approximately 150 grams needed in each of the two colors.
Option B Details
Finished Dimensions: Approximately 35cm high, 29cm broad, with a circular base circumference of 18cm.
Color Scheme: Incorporates 5 different colors for a vibrant, multicolor design. The pattern specifies Paintbox Cotton DK yarn in the following colors: 441 royal blue (base/main color at 100gr), 424 mustard yellow (50gr), 414 rose red (50gr), 434 marine (50gr), plus light blue and light green (50gr each).
Techniques and Stitches: Features a shell stitch ending, which creates a decorative scalloped or shell-like border at the top of the backpack. This finishing technique gives the design a more ornate appearance compared to Option A.
Hook and Materials: Uses a 4mm crochet hook, which produces a tighter gauge than Option A. Requires DK cotton yarn, with a total of approximately 300 grams across all five colors.
Yarn and Materials Summary
Both versions are worked with two strands of DK yarn held together throughout the project, which creates a thicker, more substantial fabric than working with a single strand. This technique allows for faster project completion while maintaining structural integrity.
- Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) cotton yarn, with a yardage of 125 meters per 50-gram skein
- Hook Sizes: Either 4mm (Option B) or 5mm (Option A) crochet hook
- Total Yardage Required: Option A requires approximately 300 meters total (150gr × 2 colors); Option B requires approximately 375 meters total (300gr across 5 colors)
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-color work and decorative finishing techniques such as crab stitch or shell stitch.
Construction Notes
The choice between Option A and Option B affects not only the aesthetic appearance but also the final size and drape of the backpack. The tighter gauge of Option B (created by using a smaller 4mm hook) results in a more compact backpack, while Option A's looser construction provides a roomier finished piece. Crafters should consider their intended use and preferred finished dimensions when selecting between the two options.
