Product Description
The Cozy Neck Cozy pattern is a digital download. This is a beginner pattern with a simple repeat that results in a beautiful reversible scarf.
I wanted a scarf to cover that space of my neck that the coat just doesn't quite get when it cold. I also wanted it short enough to just tuck in. I hate those long tails, lol. I also like that I don't have to pull it overe my head. It won't mess up your hair do.
Written in adult size with yarn weight and hook size to make the child or toddler. One of my testers wanted to make one for her toddler so she went down a couple of hook sizes and was so happy with the results. It was perfect scarf that she did have to worry that her little girl would get straggled in it.
Uses approximately 150 yards of 4 weight yarn, this pattern works up quickly. Easy to adjust the size by adding or subtracting 2 stitches.

What Is Being Made
The Cozy Neck Cozy is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl and scarf design created by independent designer Gayle Holtkamp. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a cozy neck accessory available in three sizes: Toddler, Child, and Adult. The finished adult scarf measures approximately 4½ inches wide by 28 inches long, making it a versatile piece suitable for layering or wearing as a casual neck wrap.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it ideal for beginners looking to expand their stitch repertoire. The design utilizes several core crochet stitches and techniques:
- Foundation Stitches: The pattern incorporates foundation single crochet (FSC) and foundation half double crochet (FHDC), which allow you to create your foundation and first row of stitches simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate foundation chain.
- Basic Stitches: Single crochet (SC), half double crochet (HDC), and slip stitch (SL ST) form the primary stitch structure.
- Stitch Variations: Single crochet back loop only (SC BLO) is used to create texture and definition in the fabric.
- Construction Methods: The pattern works in multiples of two, with chain spaces (SP) and skipped stitches (SK) creating the openwork or textured elements throughout the design.
Materials and Tools Required
The Cozy Neck Cozy is worked with worsted weight yarn (#4), also known as aran weight yarn. Yarn requirements vary by size: Toddler and Child versions require approximately 150 yards, as does the Adult size. Hook sizes are tailored to each version to ensure proper fabric drape and fit. The Adult pattern calls for a J 6mm crochet hook, while the Child size uses an I 5.5mm hook, and the Toddler version uses an H 5mm hook. Additionally, the pattern requires a yarn needle for weaving in ends and two poms or faux fur pieces to create decorative pom-poms as finishing embellishments.
Gauge and Pattern Structure
While gauge is noted as not critical for this project, the pattern provides a reference gauge of 14 pattern repeats by 14 rows for a 4-inch swatch. This flexibility acknowledges that worsted weight yarn can vary significantly between brands and even within the same brand line. The pattern is constructed in repeating multiples of two stitches, with chain-one spaces that do not count as stitches, allowing for straightforward pattern repeats and easy customization.
