Cozy Bonnet by Mary Gonzales

What is Being Made

The Cozy Bonnet is a newborn-sized knitted hat designed by Mary Gonzales. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a small bonnet measuring approximately 5 inches by 5 inches, making it an ideal first project or gift item for infants. The bonnet features a classic construction with ribbed detailing and a gathered crown finish.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with basic to intermediate skills. The construction begins with a flat ribbed section worked in rows on circular needles, then transitions to working in the round using both circular and double-pointed needles. The pattern incorporates strategic decreases to shape the crown of the bonnet, gradually reducing stitches to create a fitted, gathered top. The final step involves adding braids for decorative detail and weaving in yarn ends for a finished appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Knit Stitch (K): The foundational stitch used throughout most of the bonnet
  • Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches and for stockinette sections
  • Ribbing Pattern: Rows 1-3 feature a *Knit 2, Purl 2* repeat, creating vertical texture and elasticity
  • Stockinette Stitch: Alternating knit and purl rows (Rows 4-5 repeat) create smooth fabric
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used in multiple decrease rounds to shape the crown

Materials and Supplies

Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 skein of Patons Divine in Deep Earth colorway, or any comparable bulky weight yarn. Super chunky yarn weight is used throughout this design, allowing for quick completion and creating a warm, cozy fabric ideal for newborns.

Needles: Size 10 US 16-inch circular needles are used for the initial flat ribbed section and early rounds. A set of 4 Size 10 US double-pointed needles is required for the decrease rounds, particularly when working with the smaller circumference as stitches are reduced.

Additional Supplies: A yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and a tape measure for checking finished dimensions are necessary to complete the project.

Pattern Structure and Construction

The Cozy Bonnet follows a logical construction sequence. The pattern begins with casting on 36 stitches and working flat in rows. The first three rows establish a ribbed texture using the knit-purl combination, providing structure and stretch. Rows 4 and 5 are then repeated in stockinette stitch until the piece reaches 3.75 inches in length, ending with a knit row to ensure proper stitch orientation.

Once the desired length is achieved, the work is joined into a round and transitions to circular decreasing. Six decrease rounds progressively reduce the stitch count: the first round decreases to 28 stitches using *Knit 3, Knit 2 together*, followed by a plain knit round. The pattern then shifts to double-pointed needles as needed for comfort. Subsequent decrease rounds use *Knit 2, Knit 2 together*, then *Knit 1, Knit 2 together*, and finally *Knit 2 together* on every stitch, creating the gathered crown. Braids are added as a finishing detail before all yarn ends are woven in securely.
