I have always had a somewhat obsessive personality. Sometimes this is a good thing, other times it is disastrous. Since retiring I have only become worse; with more free time I find myself indulging my obsessions in a disgraceful manner. Such as rereading all the Lord Peter Wimsey books each year in chronological order, timed to savor the bell ringing chapter of “The Nine Tailors” exactly on New Year’s Eve. I am currently finishing “The Attenbury Emeralds”, so that will be it until next Fall - for that particular obsession.

Cottage Classic Crochet Shawl by MADuNaier
Project Overview
The Cottage Classic is an advanced-level crochet shawl design inspired by Victorian and Edwardian shawl traditions. This downloadable PDF pattern draws inspiration from classic cottage shawls, particularly those featuring grey with red borders as documented in crochet lace literature. The design represents a modern interpretation of historical shawl construction, offering experienced crocheters an opportunity to create an heirloom-quality accessory with contemporary design elements.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Created by designer MADuNaier, the Cottage Classic shawl moves beyond conventional shell stitch construction. Rather than relying on repetitive three-double crochet shells—a staple of traditional shawl patterns—this design introduces fresh stitch combinations and structural approaches. The pattern draws from Mary Konior's Crochet Lace as a foundational reference, reinterpreting classic cottage shawl aesthetics for contemporary makers.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
As an advanced crochet project, the Cottage Classic employs sophisticated stitch work suitable for experienced crocheters. The pattern moves beyond basic shell stitches to incorporate more complex lace construction methods typical of Victorian-era shawl design. The specific stitch combinations create intricate lacework patterns characteristic of cottage shawl traditions while offering design innovation.
Materials Required
This crochet shawl pattern requires yarn in traditional cottage shawl colorways, particularly grey with red border accents. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized to their chosen yarn weight, as specified within the downloadable PDF pattern instructions.
Photo Tutorial Format
The Cottage Classic pattern includes photo tutorial elements within the downloadable PDF, providing visual guidance alongside written instructions. This format supports advanced crocheters in navigating complex stitch sequences and shaping techniques.
