Cordate Scarf by Tori Gurbisz
What is Being Made
Cordate is a lacy knitted scarf designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This intermediate-level project features large leaves and eyelets that meander across the fabric, creating an elegant and openwork design. The finished scarf measures 76 inches (193 centimeters) long and 9 inches (23 centimeters) wide, not including optional fringe. The generous dimensions and quick knit time make it an ideal project for wrapping up warmly on cold days while showcasing beautiful lacework.
Techniques Used
Cordate employs several key knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated appearance and intermediate difficulty level. The scarf is worked from the center outward, beginning with a provisional cast on, which allows for seamless construction and symmetrical shaping from the center point. The design incorporates eyelet stitches and leaf motifs that create the characteristic lacy, meandering pattern throughout the fabric. The optional fringe adds a finished, decorative edge and is secured using a crochet hook.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a pattern stitch that combines eyelets and leaf stitches to create the openwork design. Both written and charted instructions are provided, allowing knitters to follow their preferred format. The gauge for the pattern stitch is 17 stitches over 9 inches (23 centimeters), though the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial to the project. Variations in gauge may require an additional skein of yarn to complete the full length.
Materials and Tools
Cordate is designed for super bulky yarn, allowing the project to knit up quickly despite its generous finished size. The pattern is worked with Malabrigo Rasta, a 100% Merino wool yarn that provides warmth and drape. Two skeins are required, with each skein containing 90 yards and weighing 150 grams. The sample shown is worked in the Lettuce colorway. Knitting is worked on US 17/12.75mm circular needles in a 24 to 32-inch length. A Size P/11.5mm crochet hook is optional but recommended for the provisional cast on and for securing the fringe. Bulky or super bulky weight waste yarn is needed for the provisional cast on, and a yarn needle is used for finishing.
