Copenhagen Cardigan by LillaBjörnCrochet

Project Overview

The Copenhagen Cardigan is an original crochet design by LillaBjörnCrochet (designer Tatsiana Kupryianchyk). This intermediate-level cardigan is crafted using crochet techniques and is available as a downloadable PDF pattern. The design offers multiple size options to accommodate different measurements, making it a versatile project for crocheters seeking a structured, wearable garment.

What Is Being Made

The Copenhagen Cardigan is a fitted cardigan sweater constructed entirely through crochet. The pattern includes front and back body pieces, sleeves, and a button-front closure. This garment is designed to be a classic, everyday cardigan suitable for layering and casual wear.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate crochet project employs fundamental crochet stitches to create its structure. The primary stitches used include:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – the foundational stitch used to create the base chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch that forms the main fabric of the cardigan, creating drape and structure
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – used to add variation in stitch height and texture where needed

The pattern utilizes front markers to help track stitch placement and shaping, and includes instructions for weaving in yarn tails with a yarn needle to finish the garment professionally. The cardigan features seven button placements along the front opening, requiring careful stitch counting and marker placement to ensure proper button alignment.

Materials and Tools Required

The Copenhagen Cardigan pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended drape and finish:

  • Yarn: Scheepjes Metropolis yarn, a premium blend of 75% Merino extra fine and 25% Nylon. This fiber content provides softness, breathability, and durability. The yarn is available in 50-gram balls, with each ball containing 219 yards (200 meters) of 4-ply weight yarn.
  • Yardage: Pattern requires 7 to 13 balls depending on size, providing approximately 1,533 to 2,847 total yards
  • Crochet Hook: 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Notions: 7 buttons for the front closure
  • Finishing Tools: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces
  • Stitch Markers: Markers or waste yarn to track pattern placement and shaping

Gauge and Customization Notes

The pattern acknowledges that gauge and individual crochet style can affect yarn requirements. Crocheters may need additional yarn beyond the recommended amount depending on their tension and technique. This consideration is important when selecting yarn quantities, particularly for larger sizes.

Pattern Format and Usage

The Copenhagen Cardigan is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern using UK crochet terminology. The pattern is designed for personal use only and includes copyright protection. Finished cardigans may be sold, but the designer's original pattern photographs and credits must be respected and acknowledged.
