Color Block Headband by Vibrant Viking
Project Overview
The Color Block Headband is a knitted accessory designed by Ann Iverson of Vibrant Viking. This piece is the third in the designer's Color Block Collection and offers a beginner-friendly introduction to knitting with color blocking techniques. The finished headband measures 20 inches (50.8 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.16 cm) in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes and styles.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a functional knitted headband featuring a color block design. Unlike the previous pieces in the Color Block Collection, this headband is constructed as a single piece with garter stitch borders added to each side, creating a structured, finished edge that frames the colorwork design.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Color Block Headband employs fundamental knitting techniques accessible to beginners while remaining engaging for advanced knitters. The primary construction method involves color blocking, a technique where distinct sections of contrasting colors are knitted separately or in sequence to create bold, geometric color divisions. The garter stitch border technique is applied to both sides of the main piece, providing a neat, textured frame that enhances the finished appearance and adds structural stability to the edges.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The headband utilizes garter stitch as its primary stitch pattern. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This fundamental stitch is ideal for beginners as it requires only basic knit stitches and creates a fabric with excellent drape and elasticity, making it perfect for a headband that needs to stretch comfortably around the head.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Color Block Headband is designed to be worked with fingering weight yarn, classified as 4-ply weight. The pattern calls for specific yarn selections to achieve the color blocking effect:
- Main Color (MC): Madelinetosh Euro Sock in Onyx, requiring 27 yards (25 meters) of 100% Merino wool
- Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Hello Stella Basic Stella in First Class, requiring 6 yards (5.5 meters)
- Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Hello Stella Basic Stella in Scarlett, requiring 6 yards (5.5 meters)
- Contrast Color 3 (CC3): Hello Stella Basic Stella in Lemon Drop, requiring 6 yards (5.5 meters)
- Contrast Color 4 (CC4): Hello Stella Basic Stella in Jadeite, requiring 6 yards (5.5 meters)
Yarn Fiber Content
The pattern combines two distinct yarn bases for optimal results. The Madelinetosh Euro Sock main color yarn is composed of 100% Merino wool, providing softness and breathability. The Hello Stella Basic Stella contrast colors feature a blend of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon, which adds durability and elasticity to the finished piece while maintaining the luxurious feel of Merino wool.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft. The straightforward garter stitch construction and simple color blocking technique require only basic knitting knowledge. The small yardage requirements and manageable finished dimensions make this an ideal first project for practicing fundamental skills while creating a wearable, practical accessory.
