“My Beloved Cohansie” is a collection of journal entries by Philip Vickers Fithian,a patriot and minister born in Greenwich, New Jersey in the 1700’s. His journal details everyday life in the village and on the Cohansie river, where my husband and I reside when we’re away from the crazy life of New York City. Not much has changed in the sleepy little village since, well, except for the pirates. The beauty of the Cohansie is much as it was back then.
The stitch used for Cohansie reminds me of the patterns in the water as it rolls along its winding banks and the Fleece Artist Woolie Silk captures the mood perfectly in the Salt Spray colorway.

Cohansie Cardigan by Melissa Wehrle
Project Overview
Cohansie is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Melissa Wehrle, inspired by the historical journal entries of Philip Vickers Fithian and the natural beauty of the Cohansie river in Greenwich, New Jersey. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic cardigan style suitable for years of wear, combining traditional construction techniques with contemporary design sensibility.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knitted cardigan featuring a seamless yoke construction. The garment is designed as a timeless, wearable piece that captures the aesthetic of water patterns along the Cohansie river through its stitch work. The cardigan is intended as a versatile wardrobe staple with enduring style appeal.
Construction Techniques
The Cohansie cardigan employs a bottom-up knitting method with a distinctive yoke construction approach. The lower body is worked flat in rows as a single piece up to the armholes, creating a seamless front and back section. The sleeves are knitted separately in the round, then joined to the body at the yoke and continued as one piece to complete the garment. This hybrid construction method combines the advantages of flat knitting for the body with circular knitting for the sleeves, resulting in minimal seaming and a professional finish.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern features a stitch design that visually echoes the flowing water patterns of the Cohansie river. While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the stitch work is integral to the cardigan's aesthetic appeal and contributes to its classic appearance.
