Product Description
This little coal tit loves visiting different gardens and pecking at all the different snacks they leave out for him.
This pattern works up super quickly in 1-2 hours so it would make a perfect gift! It would be a lovely decoration for a houseplant, decorative branch, or shelf.
This pattern has plenty of helpful photos to show you how the bird should look at certain stages. It is written in English using US terminology but is easy to understand for those who use English terms as the only different stitch is sc (dc in English terms). The coal tit measures 5cm tall. It is fine to sell small numbers of finished items made from this pattern but please credit me (Woolly Wilderness) as the designer.
Coal Tit Amigurumi Pattern by Woolly Wilderness
What Is Being Made
The Coal Tit Amigurumi Pattern is a downloadable crochet design for creating a small stuffed toy bird. This finished amigurumi measures 5cm tall and depicts a coal tit, a small songbird. The pattern is designed by independent designer Woolly Wilderness and is suitable for crafters with intermediate crochet experience who can complete the project in approximately 1.5 hours.
Crochet Techniques Used
This amigurumi pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques essential for creating three-dimensional stuffed toys. The design utilizes the magic ring method to begin rounds, allowing for a tight center when starting each component. The pattern incorporates invisible decreases to create seamless shaping and professional-looking seams throughout the piece. Colour changes are a significant feature of this design, requiring careful attention as the pattern uses multiple yarn colours to create the realistic bird markings. The designer recommends tracking completed stitches by crossing them out to manage the complexity of frequent colour transitions.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) - the primary stitch throughout the pattern, used to build the structure of the amigurumi
- Increase (inc) - worked as 2 single crochets in the same stitch to expand rounds and shape the bird's body
- Decrease (dec) - invisible decrease method employed to reduce stitches and create seamless shaping
- Magic ring (mr) - used to begin rounds with a tight, closed center
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is worked with DK weight yarn and a 3.00mm crochet hook. The designer used Stylecraft Special DK yarn in four specific colours to create the coal tit's distinctive markings: black, white, pistachio, and graphite. The approximate yardage requirements are as follows: 4.2 metres of black yarn, 1.3 metres of white yarn, 9.7 metres of pistachio yarn, and 4.6 metres of graphite yarn, totalling approximately 20.8 metres. The pattern achieved a gauge of 1.5 inches with these materials. It is important to note that variations in hook size, yarn weight, or personal gauge will alter the final dimensions of the completed coal tit amigurumi.
Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is best suited for crocheters who are comfortable with basic amigurumi construction and colour work. The frequent colour changes throughout the design add complexity beyond beginner-level projects, making it an ideal next step for crafters looking to develop their skills in multi-colour amigurumi creation.
