Boxy drop-sleeved sweater with a beautiful Lace pattern on body and faux seams on each side. The sweater is worked seamlessly from top down, shaping the shoulders with short rows (photo tutorial for German short row technique included). The Lace pattern has both charted and written instructions.

Upper sleeve circumference: 13 (13 ¾, 15 ¼, 16, 16 ¾, 18 ¼, 20 ½, 22)” / 32.5 (34, 38, 40, 42, 45.5, 51.5, 55) cm.

Cloudy Day Sweater by SuviKnits
What Is Being Made
The Cloudy Day Sweater is a boxy drop-sleeved sweater designed by SuviKnits. This garment features a relaxed, comfortable fit with approximately 11–15 inches (28–38 cm) of positive ease, making it ideal for layering or a deliberately oversized silhouette. The sweater is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust circumferences from 42½ inches (106.5 cm) to 70¾ inches (176.5 cm).
Design Details and Construction
This sweater showcases elegant lace patterning across the body, combined with faux side seams that add visual interest and structure to the boxy shape. The drop-sleeve construction creates a relaxed shoulder line, while the overall silhouette maintains a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic. The pattern is worked seamlessly from the top down, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
Knitting Techniques
- Top-down seamless construction: The entire sweater is knitted in one piece from the neckline downward, reducing finishing work and creating a cohesive garment
- Short-row shaping: German short-row technique is used to shape the shoulders, with a photo tutorial included in the pattern for guidance
- Lace knitting: Decorative lace patterning adorns the body, with both charted and written instructions provided for knitters who prefer either format
- Faux seams: Strategic stitch placement creates the appearance of side seams, adding definition without traditional seaming
Stitches and Techniques
The Cloudy Day Sweater employs lace stitches as its primary decorative element. The pattern includes both charted and written lace instructions, accommodating different knitting preferences and skill levels. The German short-row technique for shoulder shaping is a hallmark of this design, requiring intermediate knitting knowledge and attention to detail. Faux seams are created through careful stitch placement and manipulation, contributing to the sweater's structured appearance.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that creates a fabric with excellent drape and definition ideal for displaying lace patterns. Knitters will need circular needles appropriate for DK weight yarn to accommodate the seamless, top-down construction method. The exact yardage and needle size recommendations are specified within the pattern based on the chosen size.
Difficulty Level
The Cloudy Day Sweater is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. While the seamless construction and top-down method are accessible to many knitters, the combination of lace knitting, short-row shaping, and the need to manage multiple stitches simultaneously requires solid foundational skills and comfort with reading both charted and written instructions.
