Cloud Finger Puppet by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Cloud Finger Puppet is a charming small crochet toy designed as a wearable finger puppet featuring a cloud shape. This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet creates a soft, tactile toy perfect for imaginative play. The finished cloud can be made in two size options: a large version measuring 8.5cm x 7.5cm (3.25" x 3") or a smaller version at 5.5cm x 4.5cm (2.25" x 1.75"), depending on the yarn weight selected.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental shaping techniques to create the cloud's distinctive rounded form. The pattern begins with a magic loop, a popular technique for starting projects in the round without a visible center hole. The cloud is constructed through structured rows that build outward, creating the puffy, organic shape characteristic of clouds. Assembly involves stitching the crocheted pieces together using a sewing needle and thread, then adding embroidered facial features to bring the puppet to life.
Stitches Used
The Cloud Finger Puppet pattern employs a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to achieve its textured, dimensional appearance:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and transitions between rows
- Single crochet (sc) – A tight, dense stitch for structural support
- Half double crochet (hdc) – Used extensively throughout the pattern to create the cloud's body with moderate height and density
- Double crochet (dc) – Taller stitches that add dimension and help shape the cloud's curves
- Treble crochet (tr) – Available in the pattern for creating additional height and texture variation
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and secure stitches without adding height
Materials Required
The pattern provides flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining quality results. For the large cloud, Kerri's Crochet used grey and blue 8 ply wool, which is classified as light worsted weight in the United States and double knit in the United Kingdom. Alternatively, for the smaller cloud version, 4 ply crochet cotton can be substituted to achieve a more delicate finished size.
Additional materials needed for completion include:
- Crochet hook – A 2.5mm hook is recommended for the 8 ply yarn version
- Sewing needle and thread – Required for stitching the cloud pieces together during assembly
- Darning needle – Used for weaving in yarn ends for a finished appearance
- Embroidery or sewing cotton – A small amount needed to embroider facial features including a mouth and decorative dots on the eyes
- Scissors – For cutting yarn
Difficulty Level and Format
Rated as an intermediate crochet project, the Cloud Finger Puppet is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple stitch types and basic shaping techniques. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file, making it accessible for immediate use and convenient reference while crafting. A video tutorial is also available to supplement the written pattern instructions, offering visual guidance for construction techniques.
