Product Description
Meet Chip & Dale! I I never knew which one was Chip and which one was Dale…I had to look it up and I learned that Chip is the one with the “chocolate chip” nose. I’m not sure if that’s in any way related to how the characters were originally named but what a cute easy way to tell them apart.
I finally got around to finishing this pattern that I started well over a year ago. I have to say, the cheeks were my favorite part of this whole pattern to design. There is just nothing cuter than a chubby chubby chipmunk cheek!

Chipmunk Baby Hat (Chip & Dale) by Wonderful Woodlands
What Is Being Made
The Chipmunk Baby Hat is a knitted infant hat from the Down by the Pond Collection, designed to fit babies from newborn through 12 months old. This pattern offers three size options to accommodate growth stages: 0–3 months, 3–6 months, and 6–12 months. The hat features a classic construction with a ribbed brim, stockinette body, and shaped crown, finished with decorative ears that reference the chipmunk theme of the design.
Sizes and Finished Measurements
- 0–3 months: 12" circumference (unstretched), 6" length (not including ears)
- 3–6 months: 14" circumference (unstretched), 6.5" length (not including ears)
- 6–12 months: 16" circumference (unstretched), 7.5" length (not including ears)
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental hat construction techniques suitable for knitters with basic experience. The pattern uses in-the-round knitting on double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction. The brim is created using a long tail cast-on method, and the crown shaping utilizes strategic decreases to form the hat's fitted top. Stitch markers are essential for tracking the beginning of each round and maintaining pattern repeat accuracy throughout the project.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): Forms the stockinette body of the hat
- Purl stitch (P): Combined with knit stitches in alternating rounds to create the ribbed brim texture
- Knit 2 together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used repeatedly in the crown shaping rounds to reduce stitch count and form the hat's tapered top
- Repeat instructions (*..*): Pattern repeats are used throughout to establish rhythm and manage stitch distribution
Pattern Construction Overview
The hat construction follows a three-part structure. The brim section spans 10 rounds of alternating knit and purl stitches, creating an elastic ribbed texture that helps the hat stay securely on a baby's head. The body section consists of stockinette stitch (knit every round) and is worked to specific lengths depending on the size being made. The crown shaping section uses multiple decrease rounds with k2tog decreases spaced at regular intervals to gradually reduce the stitch count from the body and form a fitted crown.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for baby garments that provides durability and easy care. Two yarn color options are provided: cafe au lait for the Chip version or camel for the Dale version, both warm neutral tones appropriate for infant wear.
The pattern requires US size 3 and US size 7 double-pointed needles. The smaller US 3 needles are used for the ribbed brim section to create a tighter, more elastic edge, while the larger US 7 needles are used for casting on and working the body and crown sections. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and stitch markers for tracking round beginnings and pattern repeats.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working in the round on double-pointed needles. The primary challenges involve maintaining tension while using multiple needles and executing the crown decreases accurately to achieve a well-shaped hat.
