Product Description
‘…I invented pandas, and caps.’ - Noel Fielding
This is a pattern for a small stuffed toy. It is the perfect friend for your pocket or to hold in your hand.
Size may be easily adjusted by increasing/decreasing yarn weight and needles size. The pattern includes a simple embroidery picture guide and a link to a bunnymuff tutorial for the disappearing loop cast-on!
Chi Chi the Panda is worked mainly in the round and has little sewing over the legs, body, and arms. The arms are worked and set aside, then the legs are worked and then connected to work the body (in the round). The arms are then knit together with the body (if you would rather attach later by sewing see blue box below). Once the body is bound off, the head and ears are worked. Finally, the eyes and nose are embroidered (see guide), ends are woven in, pieces sewn together, and you are done!
Chi Chi the Panda Knit Toy Pattern
Project Overview
Chi Chi the Panda is an intermediate-level knitted toy pattern designed by bunnymuff (Mona Zillah). This downloadable PDF provides instructions for creating an adorable panda stuffed animal using the knitting craft. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle a toy construction project with shaping and finishing techniques.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a knitted panda toy, a three-dimensional stuffed animal featuring the distinctive black and white coloring characteristic of pandas. The finished toy is constructed through knitted pieces that are assembled together, making it an ideal project for crafters interested in amigurumi-style toy making or traditional toy knitting.
Techniques Used
- Cast-on methods: The pattern recommends disappearing loop cast-on and long-tail cast-on techniques for starting your stitches
- Three-needle bind-off: An advanced finishing technique where stitches held on two parallel needles are knit together and bound off simultaneously, creating a strong seamed edge ideal for toy construction
- German short rows: Also called German turn and work, this shaping technique creates curved sections without visible holes, essential for sculpting the panda's rounded body parts
- Color work: The pattern incorporates multiple yarn colors to create the panda's distinctive markings
Stitches and Construction
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques. The three-needle bind-off method is specifically employed to join pieces securely, which is particularly important for toy construction to ensure durability and prevent seams from separating during play or handling.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for crafters: 4-ply, sport weight, DK weight, Aran weight, and worsted weight yarns are all suitable options.
The sample shown was created using City Tweed HW by Knit Picks in Aran weight, a yarn blend containing 55% Merino wool, 25% Alpaca, and 20% Rayon with Acrylic content, providing 164 yards (150 meters) per 100 grams.
Yarn Quantities and Colors
- Main color (MC) in snowshoe: Approximately 35 yards (32 meters)
- Contrasting color (CC) in charcoal: Approximately 35 yards (32 meters)
- Additional sock weight notes: Approximately 25 yards (23 meters) for each additional color as needed
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for your chosen yarn weight. German short row needles or standard needles capable of executing German turn and work techniques are necessary for the shaping elements of this toy pattern.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches and are ready to learn or apply more advanced techniques such as three-needle bind-off and German short rows. The color work and toy assembly add complexity beyond beginner projects.
