Checks and Balances Socks by Sharon Mooney

What is Being Made

The Checks and Balances Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed to fit large children through adult women, with sizing accommodating up to 9" ankle circumference. This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Sharon Mooney creates a complete sock project suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a classic, wearable accessory.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

These socks are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for sock making. The pattern employs stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, which creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of well-made socks. The construction method utilizes circular knitting on double-pointed needles, a traditional approach that allows for seamless sock construction and the ability to work in the round continuously.

The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic knitting fundamentals, including working with multiple needles simultaneously and managing stitches across four needles. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations such as "Beg" (Beginning) and "Dec(s)" (Decrease), which are essential for following the shaping instructions throughout the sock.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch creating the smooth fabric base
  • Decreases – used for shaping the sock heel and toe areas

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for approximately one skein of Chameleon Colorworks "Twinkle Toes" yarn in the colorway Briar Rose. This yarn is a premium blend of 50% Superwash Merino and 50% Tencel, offering both durability and a luxurious feel. With 360 yards and 3.5 ounces per skein, this yardage is sufficient for completing a full pair of socks in the specified size range.

The yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and durability for sock wear. This weight strikes a balance between creating fabric with good drape and producing socks with appropriate thickness for comfort and longevity.

Tools and Equipment

  • Set of four US size 2 double-pointed knitting needles – essential for working socks in the round
  • Split ring stitch marker – used to mark the beginning of rounds and track pattern repeats
  • Yarn needle or large embroidery needle – for weaving in ends and any finishing details

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 9 rows to 1 inch when working stockinette stitch on circular needles. Achieving this gauge is critical for ensuring the finished socks fit properly within the stated size range. Knitters should always knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to verify their personal gauge matches the pattern requirements.
