Product Description
Champagne is an elegant top that will take you from late summer right into fall. A soft, rustic yarn in a neutral tone goes with anything - a tank top and flirty skirt in summer, or jeans and a crisp blouse as the days get cold. The cotton wool mix in Cotton Comfort is perfect for either, and the vest provides just enough warmth for the transition in season.
The diagonal lace creates a bias across your natural curves which is both elongating and camoflaging! Shaping is loose at the hips and fitted above, and the slanted lace accents the deep V.
Adjusting for width is easy and as long as attention is paid to row gauge, length can be adjusted as well.

Champagne Knit Top by BabyCocktails
What Is Being Made
Champagne is an elegant knitted top designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This garment is crafted to transition seamlessly from late summer into fall, offering a sophisticated silhouette suitable for layering and seasonal wear. The pattern provides multiple size options ranging from 33.25 inches to 51.25 inches around the bust, accommodating a wide range of body measurements.
Sizing and Fit
The Champagne top is available in nine different sizes with bust measurements of 33.25(34.5, 36.75, 38.25, 40.5, 41.75)(44.75, 47.75, 49.25, 51.25) inches, or 84.5(87.5, 93.25, 97.25, 102.75, 106)(113.5, 121.25, 125, 130.25) centimeters. The designer recommends selecting a size that allows for 2 to 3 inches (4 to 7.75 centimeters) of positive ease based on your bust measurement to ensure optimal comfort and drape.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for Green Mountain Spinnery Cotton Comfort, a blend of 80% Rambouillet and Columbia wool with 20% organic cotton. This yarn weight is classified as DK weight, offering a balanced thickness ideal for creating garments with excellent drape and structure. The yarn is spun at 180 yards per 165 meters per 2-ounce skein. Total yardage requirements range from 750 yards (685 meters) for the smallest size up to 1200 yards (1100 meters) for the largest size, allowing knitters to calculate precise yardage needs for their chosen size.
Needles and Notions
Knitters will need US #4 (3.5mm) needles, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. The designer specifically recommends using long circular needles when working this sweater in the round, which promotes even tension and comfortable handling of the stitches throughout the project. Additional notions required include a darning needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, waste yarn or stitch holders for securing stitches during construction, and a cable needle for any cable stitch techniques incorporated into the design.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) over stockinette stitch fabric. The designer emphasizes that row and round gauge is particularly important in this design, meaning that maintaining consistent vertical tension is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions and proper fit. Knitters should take time to swatch and measure both stitch and row gauge before beginning the project.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Champagne is constructed using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a smooth, classic appearance with characteristic V-shaped columns of stitches on the right side. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles, a construction method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless, professional-looking results. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques to achieve a fitted silhouette appropriate for a refined top design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. Knitters should be comfortable with reading pattern instructions, managing multiple stitches on circular needles, working increases and decreases for shaping, and understanding gauge and fit considerations.
