Celtic Weave Tee by Michelle Ferguson

What Is Being Made

The Celtic Weave Tee is a crocheted pullover top designed by Michelle Ferguson, available in seven sizes ranging from extra-small (30" bust) to 3X-large (54" bust). This garment is a versatile wardrobe piece suitable for intermediate-level crocheters seeking a structured yet comfortable fit.

Construction Method

The Celtic Weave Tee is constructed using a top-down approach, meaning the crocheter begins at the neckline and works downward toward the hem. After the main body is completed, trim and sleeves are added as finishing elements. This construction method allows for easy customization of length and fit during the crafting process.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc) – A fundamental short stitch providing structure and density
  • Double crochet (dc) – A medium-height stitch that forms the primary fabric of the garment
  • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – A decrease stitch used for shaping the garment
  • Front post triple crochet (FPtc) – An advanced stitch that wraps around the post of a previous row to create textured, dimensional effects characteristic of Celtic-inspired patterns
  • Back post triple crochet (BPtc) – A complementary post stitch that works behind the fabric to enhance the woven appearance
  • Chain stitch (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create foundation chains and joining

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is designed to a gauge of 15 double crochets and 7 rows over 4 inches when worked with the recommended hook. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The garment features 2 to 4 inches of positive ease due to the natural stretch of the crochet stitches, providing comfortable movement and wear.

Sizing options accommodate a wide range of body types:

  • XS: 30" bust circumference, requiring 550 yards of yarn
  • S: 34" bust circumference, requiring 820 yards of yarn
  • M: 38" bust circumference, requiring 900 yards of yarn
  • L: 42" bust circumference, requiring 1,067 yards of yarn
  • XL: 46" bust circumference, requiring 1,150 yards of yarn
  • 2X: 50" bust circumference, requiring 1,200 yards of yarn
  • 3X: 54" bust circumference, requiring 1,400 yards of yarn

Materials Required

Crafters will need sport weight yarn (#2), ranging from 550 to 1,400 yards depending on the desired size. An H (5.0mm) crochet hook is recommended, though crocheters should verify their hook size by checking their gauge before beginning the project. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a measuring tape for checking measurements and gauge, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together if needed.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch work. The inclusion of post stitches (front post and back post triple crochets) requires understanding of how to work into the posts of previous rows rather than into the tops of stitches, a technique that adds visual interest and texture but demands greater precision than basic stitches.

Pattern Notes and Construction Details

Several important pattern conventions apply throughout the Celtic Weave Tee. The starting chain does not count as the first stitch unless explicitly stated otherwise within specific pattern sections. Crocheters should work into back loops only (blo) in certain areas to create specific textural effects. The right side (RS) of the garment should be identified early in the project to ensure consistent stitch placement, particularly when working post stitches that create dimensional Celtic-inspired patterns.
