Product Description

This piece made me think of notes on a staff from the very beginning. Knit in luxurious Malabrigo Silky Merino, it flows off the needles. But still, I didn't think “notes” would be a very good pattern name. A Cadenza is a musical term referring to a solo, sometimes improvised, appearing near the end of a musical piece. When I came upon this term, it felt like it fit immediately. The project itself echoes it's name in that there is a flourish, a solo, a cadenza that must be performed towards the end. With three optional endings, you can create your own cadenza.

Cadenza Knit Scarf and Shawl Pattern by Terri Kruse

What is Being Made

Cadenza is an advanced knitting pattern for a luxurious wrap-style scarf or shawl designed by independent designer Terri Kruse. The piece is inspired by musical notation, with the designer drawing conceptual parallels between knitted stitches and notes on a musical staff. The pattern takes its name from the musical term "cadenza," referring to a solo passage that often appears near the end of a musical composition, sometimes improvised. This thematic inspiration translates directly into the knitting experience, as the pattern features a distinctive flourish or solo section near the completion of the project.

Pattern Features and Design Elements

The Cadenza pattern offers creative flexibility through three optional endings, allowing knitters to personalize their finished piece by choosing their preferred cadenza variation. This design choice encourages individual interpretation and adds an element of creative expression to the knitting process, much like the improvisational nature of a musical cadenza.

Available Sizes and Finished Measurements

The pattern is available in two sizes: Small and Large. Measurements vary depending on whether the finished piece is blocked or unblocked:

  • Unblocked measurements: Both Small and Large sizes measure 58 inches in length from tip to tip, with widest points of 5.5 inches (Small) and 10.5 inches (Large)
  • Blocked measurements: Both sizes measure 80 inches in length from tip to tip when blocked, with widest points of 6.5 inches (Small) and 11.5 inches (Large)

Knitting Techniques Used

Cadenza employs advanced knitting techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The pattern incorporates wrap and turn techniques, a method used to create short rows and shaping without leaving visible holes in the fabric. The wrap and turn technique is worked differently depending on which side of the fabric the knitter is working from:

  • Knit side wrap and turn: The knitter works to the designated stitch, brings yarn to the front, slips the next stitch purlwise, brings yarn to the back, and slips the stitch from right to left needle before turning the work
  • Purl side wrap and turn: The technique is adapted for purl-side rows, maintaining the integrity of the wrapped stitches

These short-row shaping techniques allow the pattern to create the flowing, curved silhouette characteristic of wrap-style shawls while maintaining structural integrity and visual appeal.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the complete stitch pattern details are not fully provided in the available pattern excerpt, the design clearly utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with the wrap and turn short-row shaping technique. The pattern's inspiration from musical notation suggests the possibility of stitch patterns that create visual rhythm and texture reminiscent of musical notes or staffs, though the exact stitch combinations would be detailed in the complete pattern instructions.

Yarn and Materials

Cadenza is designed to be knit in Malabrigo Silky Merino, a luxurious yarn blend that combines the softness of merino wool with silk for enhanced drape and flow. The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that allows for delicate, refined stitchwork while maintaining excellent drape—essential for a wrap-style shawl. The designer specifically notes that this yarn "flows off the needles," indicating that the Malabrigo Silky Merino's characteristics are integral to the pattern's intended finished appearance and wearability. Knitters will need appropriate needles for DK weight yarn, though specific needle size recommendations would be found in the complete pattern instructions.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with techniques such as wrap and turn short rows, reading complex pattern instructions, and managing the shaping required to create the wrap-style silhouette. The advanced difficulty level reflects both the technical shaping methods employed and the precision required to achieve the intended finished measurements and aesthetic.
