Bunny Costume for 18" Dolls by Sonya Blackstone

What is Being Made

This crochet pattern creates a complete bunny costume designed to fit 18-inch dolls. The project includes three main components: a fitted body suit, a coordinating hood, and an accessory basket filled with decorative carrots. This is an advanced-level crochet project suitable for experienced crafters looking to create detailed doll clothing and accessories.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several intermediate to advanced crochet techniques to achieve its finished appearance. Back Loop Only (BLO) and Front Loop Only (FLO) stitching create textured details and dimensional effects throughout the garment. Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc) and Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) stitches are utilized to add depth and structure, particularly useful for creating fitted seams and ribbed sections on the body suit. These post stitches allow the crocheter to work around the posts of previous rows rather than into the tops of stitches, resulting in a more tailored fit appropriate for doll clothing.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates a range of fundamental and decorative crochet stitches:

  • Chain (ch) – used for foundation rows and creating openings
  • Single Crochet (sc) – provides tight, dense fabric ideal for structured garment pieces
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – offers medium density and drape
  • Double Crochet (dc) – creates lighter, more fluid sections
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc) – adds dimensional ribbing and structure
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) – complements post stitches for textured effects
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
  • Reverse Single Crochet (rsc) – creates finished, decorative edges

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (#4 Aran) in multiple colors to create the complete costume ensemble. Yarn quantities are specified for each component: Color A (Main body suit) requires 370 yards, Color B (Accent details) requires 100 yards, Color C (Basket) requires 50 yards, and Color D (Eggs) requires 20 yards. Additional specialty colors include orange yarn for the carrots and green yarn for carrot tops, each requiring 20 yards.

Two crochet hooks are needed to complete this project: an H/8/5.00mm hook for the main garment pieces and a G/6/4.00mm hook for finer details and accessories. The smaller hook creates tighter stitches suitable for the basket and small decorative elements, while the larger hook works efficiently for the body suit and hood.
