Product Description
This is a crochet pattern for a simple baby blanket with a satin border. The texture of this thing is amazing. Seriously, I wish you could feel how soft these bobbles are, perfect for little fingers to run through them. The yellow was something I added a little pop of color in the blanket; it’s a happy color that works for little boys and girls. As always, I added a fleece lining (which is covered in little stars!) to finish it off and make it even more snuggly. The name is a bit of a tongue twister but the pattern is SO simple. This crochet pattern will have you making your own bobble blanket for your star in no time!
The PDF is 4 pages long and includes the following: *SIZING: Instructions on sizing for 36x36 inch blanket. *GAUGE *SKILLS USED: a short list of the techniques that go into this pattern *MATERIALS: what I used and recommend. *FULL PATTERN *PICTURES
Bright Stars Bobble Blanket by Shehla Ahmed
Project Overview
The Bright Stars Bobble Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a cozy baby blanket measuring approximately 36 inches square. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Shehla Ahmed combines simple construction techniques with textured bobble stitches to produce an eye-catching finished piece suitable for nurseries or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a rectangular crochet blanket with dimensions of approximately 36 inches by 36 inches, though crafters can easily customize the size by adjusting chain length and row count. The blanket features a striking textured surface created by alternating rows of bobble stitches and single crochet, which adds visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Bright Stars Bobble Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to beginners while still producing professional-looking results. The pattern relies on a repeating two-row sequence that alternates between textured bobble rows and smooth single crochet rows. This rhythm creates visual contrast and helps establish the blanket's distinctive appearance.
- Foundation Chain: The pattern begins with a long foundation chain of 105 stitches (for the 36-inch size), which can be adjusted to any odd number to customize blanket width
- Bobble Stitch Rows: Alternating rows feature the signature bobble stitch construction, where multiple double crochet stitches are worked into the same space and then closed together at the top
- Single Crochet Rows: Between bobble rows, single crochet stitches are worked into both the bobble tops and the previous row's stitches to create structure and stability
- Turning Chains: The pattern uses chain 3 at the beginning of bobble rows and chain 1 at the beginning of single crochet rows to establish proper stitch height
Stitches Used
This pattern utilizes a limited stitch vocabulary, making it ideal for crocheters building foundational skills. The primary stitches employed are:
- Chain Stitch (CH): Used for the foundation chain and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC): Worked in alternating rows to create smooth texture and structural support between bobble rows
- Double Crochet (DC): The base stitch for creating bobbles, worked multiple times into the same space
- Bobble Stitch (DC4tog or DC5tog): A decorative cluster stitch created by working multiple double crochet stitches into one space, leaving the final loop of each stitch on the hook, then yarning over and pulling through all loops at once to create a textured knob
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Bright Stars Bobble Blanket is worked in worsted weight yarn, a versatile medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and drape suitable for baby blankets. The pattern begins with black yarn for the foundation rows, establishing a bold base color that can be complemented with additional colors in subsequent sections (as suggested by the "Bright Stars" name). Worsted weight yarn works well with standard crochet hooks appropriate for this yarn weight, allowing stitches to remain clearly visible and making the bobble texture pronounced and tactile.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Bright Stars Bobble Blanket is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. While it introduces the bobble stitch—a slightly more advanced technique than basic single and double crochet—the pattern's repetitive structure and clear instructions make it manageable for those with basic crochet knowledge. The straightforward row-by-row construction and the use of only a few essential stitches allow beginners to build confidence while creating a beautiful, heirloom-quality finished piece.
