Break Through Slouchy Hat by Christiane Burkhard
What Is Being Made
Break Through is a slouchy, comfortable hat designed as a one-size-fits-all adult knitting project. This hat is ideal for showcasing both semi-solid and variegated colorways, making it an excellent choice for displaying the visual qualities of your favorite sock yarn. The slouchy silhouette provides a relaxed, casual fit suitable for everyday wear.
Construction Method
The hat is worked flat and multidirectional, meaning the construction progresses in multiple directions across the fabric rather than in a single continuous spiral. Despite being worked flat, the design requires no sewing to finish, streamlining the completion process. The garment employs a two-color construction using a main color and a contrasting color for visual interest and design detail.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Break Through utilizes several fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its structure and elasticity:
- Ribbing is used for the edging, providing exceptional elasticity that contributes to the one-size-fits-all fit. The ribbed edging ensures the hat stays securely in place while accommodating various head sizes.
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric, creating a smooth, classic knit surface that beautifully displays yarn colorways.
- Yarn overs (YO) are incorporated into the stitch pattern, creating decorative eyelet details or textural elements.
- Slip stitches help maintain stitch definition and create clean transitions between sections.
Materials Required
This intermediate-level project requires specific needle sizes and yarn weights to achieve proper gauge:
- Needles: Two circular needles in US size 2 / 2.75 mm (either 24" or 16" length) for the main fabric, and two double-pointed needles in US size 3 / 3.25 mm (one size larger) for finishing or specific sections.
- Yarn: Approximately 200 yards of fingering weight yarn in the main color, plus approximately 30 yards of fingering weight yarn in a contrasting color. Sock yarn is specifically recommended for this project.
- Additional supplies: A needle for weaving in ends, a crochet hook, and waste yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holders.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to work at a gauge of 7 stitches and 10 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. This gauge is achieved using the US 2 / 2.75 mm circular needles. The hat is engineered as one-size-fits-all for most adult heads, with the elastic ribbing edging providing the flexibility to accommodate slight variations in head circumference.
Skill Level
Break Through is classified as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multidirectional construction and color work. The flat construction and lack of required seaming make it more approachable than some intermediate patterns, while the techniques employed provide good practice in ribbing, stockinette, and decorative stitch elements.
