Brae – Women's Stranded Colourwork Jumper Knitting Pattern in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino

Brae is a women's pullover jumper knitting pattern published by Debbie Bliss in 2020, worked in the brand's beloved Baby Cashmerino yarn. This is an advanced-level knitting project that showcases traditional Fair Isle stranded colourwork across a classic fitted silhouette. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it instantly accessible for knitters ready to take on a richly coloured, multi-yarn project.

What Is Being Made

Brae is a long-sleeved stranded colourwork jumper designed for women, featuring a fitted body with set-in or structured sleeves and a finished look achieved through seaming. The garment is sized to fit a wide range of bust measurements, making it a versatile wardrobe piece with a timeless, heritage-inspired aesthetic rooted in Fair Isle knitting tradition.

The pattern is offered in four sizes, with the following finished bust measurements:

  • Size 1: To fit 86–91 cm (32–34 in) bust; finished bust 94 cm (37 in)
  • Size 2: To fit 92–97 cm (36–38 in) bust; finished bust 106 cm (41¾ in)
  • Size 3: To fit 102–107 cm (40–42 in) bust; finished bust 118 cm (46½ in)
  • Size 4: To fit 112–117 cm (44–46 in) bust; finished bust 130 cm (51¼ in)

Finished lengths range from 44 cm to 50 cm (approximately 17¼ to 19¾ inches) to the shoulder, and sleeve lengths range from 44 cm to 45 cm (approximately 17¼ to 17¾ inches), providing a proportionally balanced fit across all sizes.

Construction Techniques

Brae is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat (seamed) method. This means the body pieces and sleeves are knitted flat on straight needles from the cast-on edge upward, then joined together using seaming techniques to create the finished garment. This traditional construction approach is well suited to stranded colourwork, as working flat allows knitters to read the right side of the fabric easily and manage multiple yarn colours with greater control.

The defining technique of this pattern is stranded colourwork, also known as Fair Isle knitting. In stranded knitting, two or more yarn colours are used across a single row, with the yarn not currently in use carried — or stranded — loosely across the wrong side of the fabric. The pattern specifically instructs knitters to strand yarn not in use loosely across the wrong side to keep the fabric elastic and prevent puckering, which is essential for maintaining an even tension and a comfortable, wearable result.

The colourwork is charted, and the pattern includes instructions for reading the chart symmetrically: on every row, read the chart from the line for your size from right to left to the centre stitch, work the centre stitch, then work back from left to right to the line for your given size. This mirrored chart-reading technique creates the balanced, repeating motifs characteristic of traditional Fair Isle design.

Stitches Used

The pattern draws on a focused set of knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – the primary base fabric, worked in alternating knit and purl rows when working flat
  • Knit (k) and purl (p) – fundamental stitches forming the fabric structure
  • Fair Isle / stranded colourwork pattern – the decorative multi-colour charted motif that defines the jumper's visual character
  • Make one (m1) – an increase stitch worked by picking up and knitting into the back of the loop lying between stitches, used for shaping
  • Skpo (sl 1, k1, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease used in shaping sections
  • Decrease (dec) and increase (inc)
