Product Description
The colours are what inspired me for this pattern. I loved watching the cowl come together because the way the stitch and the colours work together make it almost look like candy. The headband was partly born out of frustration that most headband patterns I've encountered are too thin and don't cover my ears properly so I've made sure this one is nice and wide and lays flat, despite cable work, with the help of a sturdy border. But no squishiness or warmth was sacrificed, the textures of the pattern make this headband super cosy.
This pattern is suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate knitters. The headband is more advanced than the cowl but the more difficult techniques are demonstrated with the help of photos so it is a good learning pattern. The key techniques used are: in-the-round knitting, the Eye of Partridge stitch, cabling, the Blackberry stitch. Instructions are also available for putting in a lifeline and for a double-coloured long-tail cast-on.
Blueberry Pie Snood and Head Warmer by Nadine Lawrence
What is Being Made
The Blueberry Pie pattern comprises two coordinated knitted accessories: a snood and a head warmer. Both projects are designed to provide warmth and comfort, with the snood functioning as a versatile cowl that can be worn around the neck or pulled up as a head covering, while the head warmer offers an alternative head-focused design. These are practical, everyday accessories suitable for cold weather wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed for knitting, the primary craft used throughout both projects. The designs are worked in the round, which is a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric. Working in the round eliminates the need for purling in certain stitch patterns, making the construction process more efficient and the rhythm of knitting more consistent.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used in the Blueberry Pie snood is the Eye of Partridge stitch, a textured stitch pattern that creates visual interest and functional benefits. This stitch is characterized by an exaggerated stockinette appearance where approximately half the stitches visually "pop out," creating pronounced columns of texture. The Eye of Partridge stitch is traditionally used in sock construction to strengthen heels, and its application here demonstrates its versatility for creating durable, warm garments.
Additional stitches and techniques employed in this pattern include:
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl (p) – used selectively in the pattern construction
- Slip stitch (sl) – slipping stitches from the left needle to the right needle without working them, a technique used in the Eye of Partridge stitch
- Knit, purl, knit in the same stitch (kpk) – an increase technique that creates two additional stitches from a single stitch
- Purl three together (p3tog) – a decrease technique that reduces three stitches to one
Color Work and Design Elements
The snood is worked in two colors, with yarn colors alternated every two rows. This simple color-switching technique creates a distinctive zig-zag visual effect between the exaggerated columns of the Eye of Partridge stitch and the normal stockinette sections. The color work adds visual dimension and interest without requiring complex colorwork techniques such as stranding or intarsia.
Yarn and Materials
The Blueberry Pie pattern is designed to be worked in chunky weight yarn, which creates a quick-knitting, substantial fabric ideal for warm accessories. Chunky yarn produces faster results and creates the dense, insulating fabric necessary for effective cold-weather cowls and head warmers. The pattern requires needles appropriate for chunky yarn weight, which are typically larger needles that accommodate the thicker yarn diameter.
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty and is described as suitable for advanced beginners. The pattern serves as an excellent introduction to knitting in the round and working with textured stitches. While the individual techniques are not complex, the combination of working in the round with the Eye of Partridge stitch pattern and two-color work requires foundational knitting knowledge and comfort with basic stitch manipulation. This makes it an ideal project for knitters ready to expand their skills beyond simple stockinette projects.
Warmth and Functionality
The Eye of Partridge stitch creates exceptional warmth and coziness due to its textured, exaggerated structure. The stitch pattern's design, with its popping stitches and dense appearance, traps air and creates insulation, making these accessories particularly effective for cold-weather protection. The snood's construction in the round without purling makes the knitting process efficient while maintaining the stitch's warming properties.
