Biggles the Pilot Chocolate Orange Cover or 15cm Toy

What is Being Made

This is a knitted cover designed to fit a chocolate orange, or alternatively, a standalone stuffed toy approximately 15 centimetres in size. The pattern creates a charming pilot character named Biggles, featuring a segmented body with distinct color sections representing clothing and a head section that can be stuffed and finished with embroidered or applied facial features.

Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. Increasing is used to expand stitch counts, particularly at the beginning of the body where stitches are increased in every stitch to double the cast-on number, and again when shaping the head. Decreasing through knit two together (K2 tog) is used to reduce stitches at the shoulders, creating shaping and definition. Binding and tying (B and T) is the finishing technique used to close off stitches by threading the wool end through remaining stitches on the needle, drawing them up, and tying off securely. Color changes are worked throughout the pattern by switching yarn colors at designated rows to create the multi-colored design.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st): The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a characteristic V-pattern on the right side
  • Garter stitch (gs): Created by knitting every row, used selectively in the pattern for textural variation
  • Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch worked on right-side rows
  • Purl stitch (p): The reverse stitch worked on wrong-side rows when creating stocking stitch
  • Increase (inc): Stitches are added to expand the fabric width, particularly used for shaping the head and initial body expansion
  • Knit two together (K2 tog): A decrease method that combines two stitches into one, used for shoulder shaping
  • Slip stitch (sl): Listed in abbreviations for potential use in seaming or joining sections

Materials and Tools

Needles: 3.25mm needles are used throughout the pattern for working with double knitting weight yarn.

Yarn: The project uses double knitting wool in multiple colors: light brown (for the main body), dark brown (for clothing sections), white (for detail areas), black (for accents), beige (for the head), and brown (additional shading). These are described as oddments, meaning small quantities of leftover or scrap yarn can be used, making this an economical project.

Additional Materials: A small amount of polyester stuffing is required if making the toy version, and a white pipe cleaner is included for structural support or detail work, likely for creating limbs or other three-dimensional elements.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The techniques required—casting on, basic stitches, increasing, decreasing, and binding off—are foundational skills. The color-work is achieved through simple yarn changes rather than complex stranding or intarsia techniques, and the overall structure is straightforward.
