Product Description
The hat is made using just 1 ball of Rowan Big Wool, such gorgeous colours to choose from too. The finished item is quite stretchy so will fit various sizes.
Quick and easy to make up as a first project
This pattern is very similar to one of my other patterns - Big Wool Beanie 2. This hat is worked in double crochet stitch and half treble stitch.

What Is Being Made
The 'Big Wool' Beanie 1 is a crocheted hat designed as a beginner-friendly project. This beanie is crafted to fit a head circumference of 52cm and features a stretchy construction that accommodates a wider fit. The finished hat is suitable for everyday wear and offers a classic beanie silhouette.
Craft and Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber art technique that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, building fabric row by row. The 'Big Wool' Beanie 1 is classified as a beginner-level project, making it an excellent introduction to crochet hat construction for crafters new to the technique.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the initial loop and base of the project
- Slip stitch (sl st): Created by inserting the hook into a stitch, yarning over, and pulling the loop back through both the stitch and the loop on the hook, resulting in one stitch remaining on the hook. This stitch is used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Double crochet (dc): Formed by inserting the hook, yarning over, pulling the loop back through the stitch to create two stitches on the hook, then yarning over and pulling through both stitches. This produces a shorter, denser stitch ideal for structured fabric
- Half treble (htr): Executed by yarning over before inserting the hook, then yarning over again and pulling the loop back through the stitch to create three stitches on the hook, followed by yarning over and pulling through all three stitches simultaneously. This stitch is taller than double crochet and creates a more open fabric
Materials and Tools
The 'Big Wool' Beanie 1 requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 1 ball of Rowan Big Wool (or 100gm equivalent). Rowan Big Wool is a super chunky weight yarn, characterized by its thick, substantial texture that creates quick, dramatic results. This yarn weight measures approximately 80 metres per 100g ball
- Crochet hook: Size 10mm hook is the primary tool specified, with the pattern accommodating needles ranging from 10mm to 15mm depending on desired tension and fit
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 7.5 to 9 stitches and 10 to 12.5 rows measured over a 10x10cm tension square when using 10mm to 15mm needles. Achieving proper tension ensures the finished beanie meets the intended 52cm head circumference and maintains the intended fabric characteristics.
