Product Description
This was a fun one to work up and it was even more fun to give away! This is a lightweight hood & scarf combo to keep the little ones warm on the chilly Spring days.
I used one of Yarnspirations newest yarns and I am hooked (no pun intended)! Bernat Strada is so soft and squishy that I knew it would be perfect for anything that wrapped around us (I also included adult sizing...just in case).
Bear Hugs Hood & Scarf Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The Bear Hugs Hood & Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern designed to create a charming combined hood and scarf accessory for children and adults. This lightweight headwear project is ideal for keeping little ones warm during chilly spring days, while also offering adult sizing options for parents who want to match their children. The pattern combines a cozy hood structure with an attached scarf component, creating a unified garment that wraps around the wearer for extra warmth and comfort.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a hood and scarf combo piece available in two sizes. The child version measures 8 inches wide by 58 inches long, while the adult version is 8 inches wide by 72 inches long. The design includes bear paw details stuffed with polyfil to add a playful, character-like element to the finished piece. The combination of hood and scarf in one garment makes it a practical and whimsical accessory for young wearers.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to newer crafters. The construction uses basic shaping methods and straightforward stitch applications throughout the project. The pattern demonstrates how to work in rows to create the main body of the hood and scarf, with techniques for increasing and decreasing as needed for proper fit and structure.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Bear Hugs Hood & Scarf pattern utilizes several essential crochet stitches:
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the pattern, providing a balanced fabric that is neither too loose nor too dense
- Single Crochet (Sc): Used for detailed work and finishing elements
- Single Crochet 2 Together (Sc2tog): Applied for decreasing stitches where shaping is needed
- Chain (Ch): Used to create the foundation and turning chains between rows
- Double Crochet (Dc): Incorporated for specific pattern sections requiring taller stitches
- Slip Stitch (Slst): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Skip (SK): Technique for creating shaping and pattern variations
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Bernat Strada yarn, a worsted weight yarn known for its soft and squishy texture. This yarn choice makes the finished hood and scarf exceptionally comfortable against delicate skin. The pattern requires one ball each of two colors: Teal Blue/Denim and Dove Gray, allowing for creative color combinations or a solid single-color version depending on crafter preference.
A 6.5 mm crochet hook is used to work with the worsted weight yarn. The recommended gauge is 4 inches by 4 inches (10 centimeters by 10 centimeters), achieved with 11 single crochet stitches and 12 rows using the 6.5 mm hook. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Additional materials include polyfil stuffing for creating the three-dimensional bear paw details and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the various components of the hood and scarf.
Pattern Structure and Construction
The pattern begins with the child size version, starting with a chain foundation of 25 stitches using Denim yarn. The first row establishes the base with half double crochet stitches worked into the second chain from the hook and across to the end, with a chain-1 turning stitch. Subsequent rows (rows 2 through 20) continue the half double crochet pattern across each stitch, maintaining consistent structure and creating the rectangular base of the hood and scarf component.
Ideal for Beginners
With a beginner difficulty rating, this pattern is perfect for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work on a small project with practical applications. The straightforward row-by-row construction and limited stitch variety make it an excellent choice for building confidence and completing a wearable finished object.
