Product Description
Stitches weave across the surface of these socks like ivy working its way across a garden bed. The easy-to-memorize pattern repeat creates a beautiful texture that looks great in solid and semi-solid colors.
These socks are worked from the top down with a heel flap and gusset. The leg of the pattern measures about 5” / 12.5 cm to the top of the heel. To increase the length of the leg, work additional repeats of the main pattern before beginning the heel flap.
The pattern contains a lot of cables, which makes these socks less stretchy than some others. Consider making a size larger than usual or using thicker yarn and larger needles to ensure a good fit.
Yarn: 320 (350, 375, 400) yds / 293 (320, 343, 366) m of fingering weight yarn
Needles: US size 1 / 2.25 mm dpns or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: 36 sts x 50 rows per 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch after blocking
Notions: Cable needle, tapestry needle
Bayley Socks by Emily Wood
What is Being Made
Bayley Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by Emily Wood. The socks are available in four sizes to fit foot circumferences of 7" (18 cm), 7.5" (19 cm), 8" (20 cm), and 8.5" (21.5 cm). These are advanced-level knitted socks featuring a distinctive gusset stitch pattern that creates a decorative texture resembling ivy weaving across the fabric.
Techniques Used
The Bayley Socks are worked from the top down using the round construction method. The pattern incorporates several key knitting techniques including heel flap construction, gusset shaping, and stitch pickup along the heel edges. The gusset stitches are designed to weave across the surface of the sock, creating visual interest and texture. The pattern requires shifting the beginning of the round to the middle of the heel during construction. Blocking is necessary after completion to achieve the correct gauge and final dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the socks, worked in the round to create a smooth, classic fabric
- Gusset Stitches – A specialized pattern repeat that creates a textured, ivy-like design across the heel and foot areas; this pattern repeat is described as easy-to-memorize
- Slipped Stitches – Used along the heel flap for reinforcement and to create edges for picking up stitches during gusset construction
Materials Required
The Bayley Socks pattern calls for fingering weight yarn in quantities ranging from 320 yards (293 meters) for the smallest size to 400 yards (366 meters) for the largest size. The sample shown was knitted in Shibui Sock, a yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool with a yardage of 191 yards per 50-gram ball. Knitters will need US size 1 / 2.25 mm double-pointed needles (or the size required to achieve the specified gauge), a cable needle for any cable techniques, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming if needed.
Gauge and Specifications
The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches and 50 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit, particularly given the advanced difficulty level and the precise sizing options provided. The pattern is suitable for knitters with advanced skills who are comfortable working with small needles, managing multiple stitches on double-pointed needles, and executing heel and gusset shaping techniques.
Design Features
The Bayley Socks feature a beautiful gusset stitch pattern that works equally well in solid and semi-solid colored yarns. The pattern's easy-to-memorize repeat makes it accessible for memorization once learned, allowing knitters to work without constantly referencing the pattern instructions. The ivy-like texture created by the gusset stitches adds visual depth and sophistication to what might otherwise be a simple sock design, making these socks suitable for both everyday wear and display.
